Former Ghana, Ajax midfielder Yakubu Abubakari dies

Former Ghana and Ajax midfielder Yakubu Abubakari has died aged 36.

The Ghanaian Football Association announced the news on Twitter, saying: "Our thoughts are with his family. May his soul RIP."

The BBC reported that Abubakari died in hospital in Tema, a Ghanaian city, on Tuesday.

Abubakari won 16 caps for Ghana and played for them during the 2006 African Nations Cup.

He also featured during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup but was not selected to go to the final tournament.

After leaving Ghana as a 17-year-old he joined Ajax where he won the Eredivisie in 2002 and 2004 and the Dutch Cup in 2002.

He was also a regular as Ajax reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League in 2002-03 before losing to eventual winners AC Milan.

Ronald Koeman, who managed him at Ajax between 2001 and 2005, tweeted: "Rest in peace Abubakari Yakubu."
