African football federations are playing their cards close to the vest about who they will back to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in reaction to US president Donald Trump's request that Africa supports the American bid.
Trump, during a meeting with Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari earlier this week, called on African nations to support his country's joint bid with Mexico and Canada.
"I hope all African countries and countries throughout the world that we also will be supporting you, and that they will likewise support us in our bid along with Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup," Trump said.
"We will be watching very closely, and any help they could give us in that bid we would appreciate."
Voting takes place in Moscow on June 13, with only two candidates in the race: Morocco, and the joint North American effort.
KweséESPN sounded out various federations across the continent, but none would confirm who they would back, despite all 206 members' votes being made public after the process is completed.
Officials from the Nigerian, Ghanaian, Rwandan, Zambian, Ethiopian, and Zimbabwean federations were all contacted for comment, but refused to go public with their votes.
It is well known that the Nigerian and Moroccan federations have very close ties, while South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan previously said: "It is an old myth that Africa doesn't have the capacity and naysayers should stop using the political argument. Africa hosted the best FIFA World Cup ever and with good support, Morocco can emulate South Africa."
