Dortmund hope Marco Reus stays fit to play for Germany at World Cup

Borussia Dortmund hope Marco Reus remains injury free so he finally gets the chance to play in a major international tournament this summer.

Having only returned from injury in mid-February, Reus has been Dortmund's star player in recent weeks. The Germany international has scored three goals in the Bundesliga, and also set up Marcel Schmelzer's crucial equaliser in the Europa League match at Atalanta.

On Saturday, Reus was on target as Dortmund picked up a 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig to continue his fine form.

Reus had not played for Dortmund all season before making his return by coming off the bench to score the second goal in a 2-0 win over Hamburg. His career at the club has been blighted by injury, and he only managed 16 league starts last season.

"It's important for us that he stays fit," Dortmund head coach Peter Stoger later told his postmatch news conference, and added that everyone at Dortmund wants Reus to finally go to a big tournament with Germany.

After pulling out of the Germany squad with injury for both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, Reus is running out of time to force his way into the squad for the World Cup in Russia.

Stoger said: "It's also important he stays fit because we all wish that he plays the tournament in the summer. Thank God, right now, he's pain-free, and the knee is OK. Still, we must be careful not to demand too much from him."

Speaking to reporters after the match, BVB winger Maximilian Philipp, returning from a knee injury himself, also praised his teammates qualities: "If Marco stays injury free, he is just one of the best. You can see his qualities."
