Kylian Mbappe became the second teenager to score in a World Cup final, at 19 years and 207 days. Only Pele (17 years, 249 days during the 1958 final for Brazil) had done this 60 years ago. Mbappe also became the third youngest starter in a World Cup final after Pele and Guiseppe Bergomi (18 years, 201 days for Italy in 1982).

Didier Deschamps is just the third man to have won the World Cup as both player and coach, joining Mario Zagallo (who won as player in 1958 and 1962, and coach in 1970) and Franz Beckenbauer (1974 and 1990). Deschamps, like Beckenbauer, was the captain in 1998, and hence is the second man to have won as captain and coach.

Mario Mandzukic scored the first own goal in a World Cup final, and the 12th of the 2018 World Cup, which is twice the number scored at any other edition -- six in 1998.

Mandzukic's own goal, scored in the 18th minute, was the first scored in 268 minutes in regulation time across all World Cup finals. The last goal at a World Cup final which came in regulation time was Marco Materazzi's 19th-minute header to equalise the 2006 final for Italy against France. Both the 2010 and 2014 goals didn't produce a single goal in 90 minutes.

Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic both scored their third goal of the tournament, and fifth in all World Cups; only Davor Suker (six) has scored more at the World Cup for Croatia. Both Mandzukic and Perisic also became the only Croatians with three goals in a World Cup after Suker's Golden Boot winning run in 1998.

Antoine Griezmann's penalty conversion to put France 2-1 made him the 60th unique scorer in a World Cup final. The penalty came thanks of a VAR decision overturn, exactly like it did for France in their opening World Cup match against Australia, which they won 2-1.

Croatia have trailed in all four of their knockout matches at the 2018 World Cup, the first time that this has happened in all World Cups. The only other team to have trailed in the knockouts more than once were Italy in 1970, who overturned deficits in the quarters and the semis and yet made the final, where they fell behind to champions Brazil in the final.

The World Cup final has produced six goals for the first time in 52 years, since England beat West Germany 4-2 in the 1966 final in London. Only the 1958 final, which Brazil won 5-2 against Sweden, produced more goals than the 2018 edition.
