England exorcise penalty kick demons to beat Colombia: How social media reacted

England won a penalty kick shootout at a World Cup for the first, exorcising their demons from the spot to beat Colombia to advance to the quarterfinals.

A late Colombia equaliser forced extra time and had England fearing the worst but the Three Lions held their nerve defeating Colombia 4-3 on spot kicks.

Here's how the world of social media reacted to the dramatic ending...

Wouldn't be an England game without some North London derby banter. Three penalty kicks for Spurs players past an Arsenal 'keeper was just too good an opportunity to pass up...

Look what it meant to the lads over at ITV Sport... three former England internationals, one moment of pure elation.

Our Mark Ogden...

How'd they react back in London? Well look for yourself....

Well I guess Mark wasn't "speechless" after all... his rapid reaction to England's historic shootout win.

Former England international and football pundit Stan Collymore live from the England end. ABSOLUTE SCENES

Homer has a point...

From a man who has suffered over the years.

Even NFL analyst Trey Wingo is into the World Cup.

More celebrations

It is too early yet to say #itcominghome but Jesse Lingard isn't coming home anyways.

Well said captain!

Here's the roar from the BBC newsroom. #itscominghome

That time you went to a bar, but were the only England fan there. This is... erm... brave.
