By the numbers: Messi and Ronaldo's knockout ducks; Kylian Mbappe emulates Pele

Messi and Argentina out. Ronaldo and Portugal out. Who's next? Here are the most notable numbers from the first day of the knockout games.

0

Lionel Messi is yet to score from eight knockout games in World Cup history. Interestingly, his 23 shots in these matches without scoring are the second highest since 1966, behind Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos, who had 29. He did register his fifth World Cup assist in the match, though, thus becoming only the third player alongside Thomas Muller and Diego Maradona to have registered five goals and five assists over the last 10 World Cups.

6

Cristiano Ronaldo has now played six knockout matches in World Cup history without scoring a goal. He was part of the Portugal team that made the semi-finals in 2006, and now has faced round of 16 exits in both 2010 and 2018. This is also the first time that Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are both eliminated from the same competition on the same day; the closest to this was the Champions League in 2011-12, when Messi's Barcelona were eliminated by Chelsea a day before Bayern Munich sent Ronaldo's Real Madrid packing.

2

Kylian Mbappe -- at 19 years, 193 days -- is just the second teenager to have scored more than one goal in a World Cup knockout match, emulating Pele's feat from the 1958 World Cup, when he scored a hat-trick in Brazil's 5-2 win against France in the semi-final. In all, Mbappe joins Pele and four other teenagers with multiple goals in one World Cup -- Michael Owen (for England in 1998), José Altafini (for Brazil in 1958) Edmund Conen (for Germany in 1934) and Manuel Rosas (for Mexico in 1930). Pele remains the youngest ever among them, though, at 17 years, 244 days during the 1958 semi-final.

32

France's 4-3 win over Argentina provided the first World Cup knockout match in 32 years where both teams scored three or more goals. The last time this happened was at the Mexico World Cup in 1986, when Belgium beat Soviet Union 4-3 after extra time. The most prolific knockout match in recent years is still Germany's 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-final four years ago.

598

Uruguay conceded their first goal in 2018, and the first in 598 minutes in international football. The last goal they conceded before Pepe's equaliser was in a friendly against Austria in November 2017. They went 325 minutes without conceding at this World Cup.

7

Javier Mascherano picked up his seventh yellow card of the World Cup against France, the most by one player in the history of the tournament since cards were introduced in the 1970 edition. He also announced his retirement after his 147th cap for Argentina, a record for his country.

1

Pepe is now the oldest player for Portugal to have scored a World Cup goal, with his strike in the round of 16 game against Uruguay coming at the age of 35 years, 124 days. In a way, each of Portugal's six goals scored at this World Cup have seen the record for oldest Portuguese scorer re-written, first by Cristiano Ronaldo (33), then Ricardo Quaresma (34) and now Pepe.
