Wayne Rooney may have made his final appearance at Old Trafford for Manchester United with Jose Mourinho admitting the England captain is unlikely to play in Sunday's Premier League finale at home to Crystal Palace.
Rooney, 31, faces an uncertain future at United having lost his regular start place under Mourinho this season. The former Everton forward rejected the chance to move to the Chinese Super League in February, insisting he wanted to help United pursue silverware this season.
But with Chinese clubs preparing to make a renewed move for Rooney this summer and United expected to listen to offers for their all-time record goalscorer, he looks set to be denied an Old Trafford farewell with Mourinho planning to field a team of youngsters -- with the exception of £89.3 million world record signing Paul Pogba -- ahead of next Wednesday's Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm.
"We will bring 3-4 of the first-team players on Sunday, one half for each one, to give a bit of experience for each and save them all for Wednesday," Mourinho said. "But I don't know about Wayne.
"He played 90 minutes in the last game [against Southampton], so probably not."
With Mourinho determined to focus on the Ajax game, the United manager has made it clear he will hand senior debuts to a host of the club's youngsters alongside Pogba and Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who has recovered from a shoulder injury in time to play against Sam Allardyce's team.
