Cruzeiro sack coach Marcelo Oliveira after titles, hire Vanderlei Luxemburgo

SAO PAULO -- Cruzeiro have fired Marcelo Oliveira, the coach who led the team to the Brazilian league titles for the last two seasons, and hiredĀ Vanderlei Luxemburgo to him.

Tuesday's announcement came two days after a 2-1 loss at Figueirense in the fourth round of the Brazilian league left the Belo Horizonte club in second-to-last place in the 20-team standings with only one point.

It also was eliminated by River Plate in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores after a 3-0 loss at its Mineirao Stadium.

It will be Luxemburgo's second stint with Cruzeiro. He coached the team for the first time from 2002-04, winning three titles in 2003 -- the Minas Gerais state championship, the Brazilian Cup and the Brazilian league.

The former Brazil and Real Madrid coach was at Cruzeiro's helm for 107 matches, winning 68, losing 17 and drawing 22. Luxemburgo was fired by Flamengo last month after the team's winless start in the Brazilian league.

Oliveira became Cruzeiro's coach in December 2012, winning 105 matches, losing 32 and drawing 32. The team became the first to win back-to-back Brazilian league titles since Sao Paulo from 2006-08.
