Cristiano Ronaldo sings as Real Madrid title celebrations go late into night

MADRID -- Cristiano Ronaldo led the celebrations at the Plaza de Cibeles as Real Madrid partied deep into the night following their 2016-17 La Liga title triumph.

Ronaldo and Karim Benzema got the goals as Madrid won 2-0 at Malaga on Sunday evening to clinch a first Spanish championship in five years, with Zinedine Zidane and his players flying straight back home to join an estimated 50,000 fans in a street party in the centre of the Spanish capital.

It was after 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning when Ronaldo took the microphone by the famous fountain of the ancient goddess and serenaded those present with his own version of "Real Madrid, I love you."

Other songs coming from the celebrating Blancos players included "Pique, cabron [bastard], salute the champion," aimed at the Barcelona defender who has poked fun at Madrid during past title parties for his club.

Neighbours Atletico Madrid were also targeted with "Tell me how it feels," a reworking of Argentina fans' song aimed at their Brazilian counterparts during World Cup 2014, and a nod to a recent Bernabeu banner before their Champions League semifinal first leg celebrating wins over their neighbours in the 2014 and 2016 UCL deciders.

According to AS, 28 people received medical attention due to "tiredness and dizziness", with the worst injury reported among those present a broken ankle after a fall during over-exuberant celebrations.

Blancos fans woke up -- possibly later than usual -- on Monday morning to AS' cover which said "Champions" and "Madrid seal the title with a well won victory over a good Malaga side."

Marca's front cover simply bore the number "33," recognising the record number of La Liga trophies now in Madrid's possession, while also saying that "the dream continued" as they are 90 minutes from a double if they can beat Juventus in the Champions League final on June 3 in Cardiff.

Madrid's players also needed to be back up and about Monday morning, with official visits scheduled to both the local town hall and regional government headquarters around lunchtime to receive congratulations and pose for photos with club president Florentino Perez and local politicians.

Before flying back from Malaga, Madrid captain Sergio Ramos had replied to ex-Barca president Joan Gaspart, who had said pre-game that he hoped Madrid lost the league on the last minute of the final day thanks to an own-goal from their skipper.

"The last Gaspart I know was one of the three kings, who I ask for things at Christmas," Ramos joked. "He can keep dreaming and have a glass of Dom Perignon, I'll pay for it. Balls to him who has to talk about Sergio Ramos to get his name in the papers."

Back in October Luka Modric had laid out La Liga as his team's main objective this season. With that job now completed, Modric said he was delighted to have "finally" got his hands on a league medal in his fifth season at the club, while also recalling that his team could now add a third Champions League victory in four years.

"At last," Modric said. "I am happy. It has been an incredible year. We've waited a long time, but in the end it was worth all our hard work. We still have a final to play now, and we must finish up in the best way possible."

Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas appeared in the La Rosaleda mixed zone with Marcelo having shaved his head moments earlier during the dressing-room celebrations.

"This is for all those kids who are getting cancer treatment," Navas explained. "For their families, that they keep fighting. This title is for them. I ask God for them to recover."
