Torres scores a brace as jubilant Atleti close Calderon chapter with a victory

A jubilant Vicente Calderon witnessed its final La Liga game and Atletico Madrid did not disappoint, seeing off Athletic Bilbao 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The atmosphere was electric before kickoff and reached fever pitch early on in the match, as Fernando Torres struck a double in what was a fairytale opening period for the hosts.

The party mood grew inside the ground with waves and songs from a bygone era, however Inaki Williams almost proved party pooper as he halved the deficit with 20 minutes to play.

Yet Angel Correa's close-range effort put the icing on the cake and ensured Los Rojiblancos would be the final team to come away with all three points from the grand old ground ahead of their move to the Wanda Metropolitano next season.

Positives

What a way to say goodbye! It just had to be Torres, who looked like a man possessed. A massive doff of the cap to the fans, who made it an unforgettable afternoon for all in attendance.

Negatives

What was not to like? Three points, a Torres brace and a perfect goodbye.

Manager rating out of 10

8 -- Diego Simeone wanted to say adios to the Calderon with a victory and he got his wish. His celebrations when Torres made it 2-0 were a sight to behold. It looked like the manager would run onto the pitch at one point.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Jan Oblak, 7 -- Made a couple of smart stops to keep his side ahead, with one in particular just after the restart top drawer. Stood no chance with the goal after the deflection.

DF Thomas Partey, 6 -- Missed a sitter in the last minute that would have seen the proverbial roof come off, but as it was the crowd found it almost funny.

DF Stefan Savic, 7 -- The senior man at the back stood up well to the challenge of Aritz Aduriz. Unfortunate deflection on the goal. Solid bar that.

DF Saul Niguez, 6 -- Filled in at the back and is an option there in emergencies moving forward.

DF Lucas Hernandez, 7 -- Always does what is asked of him, be it in the middle of the defence or out wide. Will have a big role to play next season.

MF Yannick Carrasco, 7 -- Was electric at times, infuriating at others. Went close on the stroke of half-time with a thunderbolt.

MF Tiago, 7 -- Played a great ball in for the second goal. An all-action 88 minutes, as he gave everything in his final appearance for the club. Left the pitch in tears and got the standing ovation that his service to Los Colchoneros deserved.

MF Gabi, 7 -- Covered every blade of Calderon grass one last time. Appeared emotional at the end as the players stood in the centre circle to give their thanks.

MF Koke, 8 -- Was involved in the buildup for the first goal and it was his brilliant cushioned header to set up Torres for the second. Used the ball well all afternoon.

FW Antoine Griezmann, 8 -- Helped get the ball rolling as he teed up Torres to open the scoring. Was desperate to score and unfortunate to be denied by the post before Correa made it 3-1.

FW Fernando Torres, 9 -- You could not have written a better script. Two goals in the first 11 minutes ensured there was a fiesta on the banks of the Manzanares. Should have had a hat trick, but was denied by an outstanding goal-line clearance after rounding the keeper. Was cruelly subbed on the hour, but the ovation he got was as loud as they come.

Substitutes

FW Kevin Gameiro, 6 -- Did not offer the same kind of threat as the man he replaced.

MF Nicolas Gaitan, 5 -- Put in an anonymous last 25 minutes. Still does not look good enough for Atleti, even from the bench.

MF Angel Correa, N/R -- Was brought on to allow Tiago his emotional goodbye and stole his teammate's thunder a bit by netting a matter of seconds after entering the fray late on.
