Derby seal play-off spot as Barnsley are relegated

Derby secured a Championship play-off place in style by thrashing Barnsley 4-1 at Pride Park to condemn the South Yorkshire club to relegation.Cameron Jerome struck on the break to give Derby an advantage they never looked like losing and Matej Vydra's 21st league goal of the season settled any home nerves.David Nugent and Tom Lawrence completed Derby's stroll in the sunshine and although George Moncur pulled one back, it was no consolation as Barnsley returned to League One, with the club announcing Jose Morais' contract as head coach had been terminated in the immediate aftermath of the match.Derby brought in Marcus Olsson at left wing-back and he created the first chance when he hit a 20-yard shot that forced Jack Walton into a flying save.Barnsley's response had Derby in trouble when Connor Mahoney sent a low ball across the face of the six-yard box but Kieffer Moore could not bring it under control at the back post. Not long after, Derby took the lead. Mahoney lost the ball to Bradley Johnson near the left touchline and his pass sent Jerome clear to drive a shot into the roof of the net for a 14th-minute opener. It was not the start a team that had lost their last five away games needed but Barnsley almost replied three minutes later when a Liam Lindsay glancing header went just wide with Scott Carson scrambling.Derby thought they had a second in the 25th minute when Richard Keogh's shot came back off the bar but referee Simon Hooper ruled Jerome handled the ball before he slammed in the rebound.Olsson went off injured and was replaced in the 38th minute by top scorer Vydra who sent a free-kick from just outside the area over the bar but at half-time, Derby were heading into the play-offs and Barnsley were staying up.The Rams began the second half intent on finishing the job with Johnson's 20-yard shot turned behind by Walton before the midfielder played Jerome in but he shot wide under pressure.Moore almost got his head on a cross but Derby scored again in the 55th minute when Jerome crossed from the right and Vydra beat Walton from six yards.Barnsley went close again when Oliver McBurnie's shot was deflected just wide but results elsewhere meant they were going down unless they could fashion a remarkable comeback. However, any hope of that vanished when Nugent replaced Jerome and immediately headed in Vydra's cross in the 68th minute before he ran through on the right and crossed for Lawrence to steer the ball wide of Walton.Moncur replied with a curling effort from the edge of the area in the 81st minute but it proved to be no more than Barnsley's parting shot to the Championship.

Barnsley win boosts survival hopes and ends Brentford's play-off dream

Barnsley defied the form book to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation with a stunning 2-0 victory over promotion-chasing Brentford.Kieffer Moore scored the opener after 11 minutes before Oliver McBurnie headed in the second six minutes after the break in what might have been his last home appearance for the Tykes. The home side had lost more points from winning positions at home than any other side before the game, but they held on to end their run of four games without a win. The victory was as big as they come for Barnsley too as it moves them out of them out of the danger zone - but only on goal difference. Meanwhile, defeat ended any slim hopes Brentford had of earning a play-off spot and the lack-lustre performance saw their run of three unbeaten away games end too. Barnsley took a shock early lead through a swift counter-attack. Gary Gardner won the ball inside his own box, broke to the halfway line and released Moore down the left-hand side. The striker then looked to cross with his weaker left foot but instead saw the ball sail over David Bentley and go in off the post.Moore should have doubled his tally in the 25th minute when Connor Mahoney sent a delightful cross into the box but the forward could not quite direct his diving header on target and it flashed just wide. The visitors were beginning to stamp their authority on the game and Oliver Watkins found himself with space to run into and only goalkeeper Jack Walton to beat, however Liam Lindsay somehow recovered and ended the danger with a superb sliding tackle. Shortly before the break, the Scottish defender made another important block from Sergi Canos' shot, while - from the resulting corner - Chris Mepham was unlucky to miss with a snap-shot from the edge of the box. With the Bees failing to take advantage of their pressure, Barnsley struck again six minutes after the restart. Adam Hammill registered his first assist of the season at a pivotal time as his deep-corner delivery found McBurnie, who netted his ninth goal for the club in front of the home fans. Unbelievably, Moore then missed an open goal from six yards. Mahoney had done well to beat two defenders and cut in on his left, Bentley matched the 21-year-old's shot but he could only push it to Moore who skied his effort. Barnsley were full of confidence and Hammill flicked the ball to Moore, but could not quite find the bottom corner with his left foot as he sent it wide again. Yoann Barbet dragged an effort well wide for the travelling side before Mepham tried to blast an effort in from distance but Brentford could not get past the home defence.

Forest defeat leaves Barnsley deep in relegation trouble

Nottingham Forest left Barnsley fighting for Championship survival as Aitor Karanka's side cruised to a comfortable 3-0 success at the City Ground.Lee Tomlin scored a spectacular goal of his own, before setting up another for Ben Brereton, and sub Apostolos Vellios netted a late third, as Karanka dealt a severe blow to his old friend, Tykes boss Jose Morais, who he worked alongside at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. There was no favours to be done between friends here, as Forest won to leave Barnsley two points adrift of safety, behind 21st-placed Bolton, with two games left to play.Morais will hope that Karanka does provide a favour before the end of the season, however - as Forest face a trip to Bolton on the final day.Barnsley keeper Jack Walton was a busy man, with Matty Cash forcing the first save of the game from him after turning neatly on the edge of the box before whipping a shot across the face of goal that was brilliantly pushed away.Walton made rather simple work of saving a driven effort from Tomlin, from the edge of the box, as Forest made a confident start.Cash was a lively figure down the right and when he controlled brilliantly, it gave him the chance to cut inside and dart across the face of the box, before simply feeding Tomlin. He had the time and space to pick his spot and the on-loan Cardiff man did exactly that, finding the top corner with a delicious bending effort. That goal came in the 26th minute and Walton was quickly called into action again to deny both Tomlin and Adlene Guedioura when they attempted audacious overhead kicks.Stefanos Kapino did have to make a strong save, to parry a vicious strike from Oliver McBurnie. But it was Forest who were to double their advantage, as Tomlin split the Barnsley defence with a precise pass nine minutes before half-time, sending Brereton racing clear on goal. The 19-year-old rounded the keeper calmly, before slotting an equally composed finish into the back of the net.A fine first half for Forest ended on a sour note when Spanish defender Juan Fuentes, who was making his debut, collected a serious looking injury from a committed challenge with Dimitri Cavare. He received lengthy treatment which extended into the interval and it was no shock when he was replaced by Ben Osborn at the start of the second half.Osborn almost had an instant impact with a clever free kick that dipped only a foot or so over, after taking a deflection.Although Barnsley's own half-time substitute, Connor Mahoney, also flashed a shot wide - a powerful header from Liam Lindsay had the same outcome.Forest continued to press with Cash driving a crisp strike into the side netting, with Walton beaten. But Kapino had to react smartly to block a crisp effort from Mahoney and again to deny Gary Gardner. But two Forest subs combined to round things off in injury time, with Walton brilliantly denying Joe Lolley, only for Vellios to sweep home the rebound.

Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom helps push former side Barnsley closer to danger

Paul Heckingbottom helped push his old club closer to relegation as his Leeds side beat Barnsley 2-1 at a sun-drenched Elland Road.Heckingbottom left Oakwell under a cloud in February and he did his hometown club no favours on Saturday, with the defeat leaving the Reds two points from safety.Left-back Tom Pearce netted his first goal on only his third appearance to put Leeds ahead but Barnsley were level at the break after fellow youngster Paudie O'Connor put through his own net.Gjanni Alioski restored Leeds' advantage early in the second half and that was enough to give them only their third Championship win of 2018, leaving Barnsley needing to pick up points in their game in hand at Nottingham Forest in midweek.Leeds Under-18s were crowned champions earlier in the day but the first team's hopes of celebrating a successful campaign in spring sunshine ended during a post-Christmas meltdown.United came into the weekend with the fewest points in the Championship this year, leaving Heckingbottom under pressure less than three months into his tenure.Barnsley declared themselves "shocked and thoroughly disappointed" following his decision to leave Oakwell, comments Heckingbottom described this week as "bang out of order".The Reds, who earned a late draw against relegation rivals Bolton last time out, began the Yorkshire derby like a side with a point to prove but it was Leeds who threatened first.Alioski dispossessed Matt Mills inside the Barnsley box to leave himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Adam Davies but he could only lift his shot well wide. But there would be no escape for the visitors after 17 minutes when Bradley Potts gave the ball away and Pearce punished him by driving forward before unleashing a left-footed strike across Davies into the bottom corner. The visitors appeared rattled by the goal but they put their bodies on the line from a dangerous Leeds corner and began to ask questions at the other end.Young United goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell did well to claw the ball away after Pontus Jansson opted to leave Adam Hammill's low cross and then comfortably saved a Potts effort.Leeds did not heed the warnings, though, and were pegged back in the 37th minute when Jansson failed to deal with Ezekiel Fryers' left-wing cross and O'Connor sliced a split-second attempted clearance beyond Peacock-Farrell.Barnsley were all over Leeds in the closing stages of the half and would have gone into the break ahead but for a brilliant save by Peacock-Farrell from Connor Mahoney's low stoppage-time effort.Half-time allowed the hosts to regroup and they were back in front five minutes after the restart as Kemar Roofe got in behind Mills and kept his composure on the byline to give Alioski an easy finish from his centre.Barnsley responded positively and thought they were back level when Oli McBurnie finished Mahoney's cross only to be denied by the offside flag. The visitors rarely threatened as the game entered the closing stages but, when a golden opportunity did present itself to substitute Kieffer Moore, he failed to tap into an empty net.Hammill was booked for diving following a challenge from Matthew Pennington in the box as Barnsley sought an equaliser that never came.

Oliver McBurnie grabs last-gasp equaliser for Barnsley against Bolton

Oliver McBurnie's last-gasp header earned Barnsley a point in a dramatic 2-2 draw with relegation rivals Bolton at Oakwell.Gary Gardner opened the scoring in the first half before goals from Adam Le Fondre and Craig Noone looked to have won it for the Trotters in the final 10 minutes. However, McBurnie popped up deep in stoppage time to score a header from point-blank range to salvage a point for the hosts. The result meant Barnsley remained in 22nd spot in the Sky Bet Championship, but remained just one place and two points behind their opponents.Barnsley found themselves in front on 22 minutes, Gardner pouncing to power a thunderous effort into the back of the net from a corner.Ben Alnwick was unable to claim the ball into the box and McBurnie almost scored. He turned his man, only to see his shot blocked on the line. The follow-up was blocked again, but the loose ball was claimed by Gardner and he lashed home. The Bolton defence were struggling to deal with corners and almost fell further behind from another. They failed to clear again on 39 minutes and allowed McBurnie to create an opening for himself, but he curled his shot wide after showing good close control.Minutes before that, Bolton had their first meaningful attempt of the game, as Sammy Ameobi tricked his way past a defender but saw Adam Davies beat his shot away.Bolton went close after the restart through David Wheater as his header was cleared off the line by Andy Yiadom. In the run-up to the corner there had been strong appeals for a Trotters penalty. Yiadom was again at the centre of the action, with the Bolton players claiming he had handled the ball in blocking a shot from Ameobi. Barnsley were then denied a penalty themselves, as Kieffer Moore was brought down inside the area but nothing was given. Justice was perhaps served for Bolton on 79 minutes when they were awarded a spot-kick. Substitute Will Buckley tangled with George Moncur and Le Fondre despatched the resulting penalty to set up what would be a frantic closing period. The visitors looked to have won it five minutes from time. Yiadom and Davies had a coming-together and, from a loose ball, Noone was able to find the net to send the travelling fans wild. However, McBurnie popped up at the back post deep into stoppage time for Barnsley to head home from close range to make it 2-2 and leave both teams to contemplate what could have been as they left with a point apiece.

              Ipswich Town 1-0 Barnsley

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy has quit his post four games early following his side's 1-0 home win over his former club Barnsley. The 59-year-old had been due to leave the Championship outfit at the end of the season but instead quit after Jonas Knudsen's 54th-minute goal left the team 12th in the table and above rivals Norwich on goal difference. The former Republic of Ireland manager had been linked with becoming Barnsley's manager earlier in the season after Paul Heckingbottom left Oakwell to manage Leeds. In the first attack of the game Barnsley forward Brad Potts fired wide of the left hand post from outside the penalty area and in the third minute a raid down the right by Barry Cotter, making his first team debut for the home side, ended in a foul on the full-back.Ipswich defender Jordan Spence then fouled Oliver McBurnie outside the penalty area and Andy Yiadom's free kick was deflected over the bar for a corner. From there Adam Hamilll's kick was headed onto the bar by former Ipswich player and Barnsley striker Kieffer Moore and cleared to safety. In the 11th minute good build-up play by Town resulted in a shot at goal by Bersant Celina which was comfortably gathered by Barnsley keeper Adam Davies.A minute later a cross shot from Hammill was palmed to safety by Ipswich keeper Bartosz Bialkowski as the game went from end to end.A through ball from Barnsley midfielder Gary Gardner to Potts, midway through the first half, almost broke the deadlock as the striker's shot hit the side netting. In the 31st minute great play from Mustapha Carayol wide right set Martyn Waghorn free on the outside of the penalty area and his square pass to Celina left him with just the Barnsley keeper to beat but he blazed his shot over the bar.The visitors had the ball in the net in the 38th minute when a free kick found the head of Moore and onto Lloyd Isgrove who was adjudged to be offside.A minute later Cotter's powerful shot from outside the penalty area, following a darting run by Carayol, went just over the bar.A great headed ball forward by Moore in the 48th minute found McBurnie free on goal but his shot sailed narrowly wide.Ipswich then took the lead in the 54th minute following a corner by Carayol and a near post header by Knudsen which found the right hand corner of the goal.In the 71st minute a foul on Barnsley substitute Tom Bradshaw by Knudsen led to a free kick just outside the penalty area which was cleared up field into the visitors' half only for Waghorn to drag his shot wide.In the 79th minute Waghorn headed just over the bar and with time running out the same player found himself unmarked in the penalty area but blazed the ball over.A goalmouth scramble in the Ipswich penalty area in 89th minute led to the ball being cleared as the home side held on for the points.

Barnsley stun Sheffield United to boost Championship safety push

Barnsley gave their survival chances a huge boost with a 3-2 over South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Oakwell.Barnsley struck first through Gary Gardner before goals for the Blades from John Fleck and Leon Clarke put the visitors in front by midway through the second half. However, the game was far from over as Oliver McBurnie levelled for the home side before Tom Bradshaw headed in a dramatic 88th-minute winner. The win for Barnsley strengthens their hopes of staying in the Sky Bet Championship and was a first home success for head coach Jose Morais. The result provided bitter disappointment for opposite number Chris Wilder, however, as the Blades missed an opportunity to keep pressure on the teams in the play-off positions.Barnsley midfielder George Moncur had the first effort on goal, rattling the crossbar from a short corner. It was relegation-threatened Barnsley who struck the opener too. Moncur delivered a low corner that was cleared to the edge of the box and lurking was Gardner, who drove the ball first time into the top right of the net.Barnsley had two great chances to double their lead. Kieffer Moore took the ball past United goalkeeper Simon Moore but saw his shot blocked before Lloyd Isgrove stole the ball on the halfway line and burst forward, finding Moncur in space, but a slip just before his shot meant it was comfortable for Moore.United had started to find their flow and were dominating after the break and Fleck put the scores level after 57 minutes. Just outside the box, he got past Brad Potts and rifled the ball into the back of the net, leaving Adam Davies with no chance. The Blades then went ahead through top scorer Clarke. Davies had done well to deny him in a one-on-one situation but chaos ensued with both himself and Adam Jackson failing to clear. Clarke took advantage of the uncertainty to put United 2-1 up in front of the travelling fans.Going behind seemed to rejuvenate Barnsley, along with the introduction of Adam Hammill, who made an immediate impact. The 30-year-old winger cut inside and tried his luck on his left foot and Moore could not hold the shot, allowing McBurnie to poke in his seventh goal for the club. With time running out, Moore's drilled cross then found Bradshaw at the back post and the Welsh striker made no mistake in front of the Kop end to secure all three points.

Josh Brownhill returns to Barnsley to rescue a point for Bristol City

Bristol City scored a late equaliser against Barnsley as the sides fought out a 2-2 draw.Kieffer Moore broke the deadlock early on from a corner, before Famara Diedhiou got one back for the visitors.Brad Potts then grabbed what looked to be a winner for Barnsley but Josh Brownhill scored in added time and equalise on his return to Oakwell.A point suits neither side, with Bristol City falling off the pace and out of the play-off places in recent weeks. It may be more valuable for the Tykes, as it moves them one clear of the relegation zone but they remain winless at home in 2018.Barnsley started the game brightly, with City defender and last man back Nathan Baker fortunate to only receive a yellow card when he brought down Moore just outside the area. From the resulting corner the Tykes got their reward. George Moncur, one of four changes to the starting line-up, delivered the dead ball towards the front post and Moore beat all competition to head in the opening goal in the seventh minute.City soon found their way though and it was only some great defensive work from Adam Jackson and Andy Yiadom which prevented Bobby Reid from having two opportunities to test Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies.Davies was left helpless moments later though as City struck back on the half-hour mark. Marlon Pack sent a diagonal pass to Diedhiou on the edge of the Barnsley box and the Senegalese frontman curled the ball beautifully into the top right corner. With the scores level, in-form loanee Oliver McBurnie should have sent his side ahead just before the break after Moore headed down Yiadom's long ball into the box, but the Scottish striker could only direct his header straight at Frank Fielding.Fielding saved his team shortly after the break, somehow managing to get across his net and stop Potts poking home at the back post from Moncur's teasing delivery.Moore had two more bites of the cherry but was denied by Fielding twice. The striker got in behind the defence from Gary Gardner's inch-perfect ball but Fielding did well to keep him out, then got down to prevent the 25 year-old from heading in from the resulting corner.Moore was then involved again as Barnsley took the lead. The Tykes striker ran on to substitute Joe Williams' lofted ball and Moore waited perfectly before rolling a cross into the box and it was Potts who sprinted in front of his man to prod home with just twelve minutes remaining.Former Barnsley loanee Brownhill then delivered his old team a huge blow, sending a looping header over Davies from Joe Bryan's cross to level the game in injury time.
