Hull edge seven-goal thriller as Canaries are silenced

James Maddison scored a first-half hat-trick and still ended up on the losing side as Hull boosted their survival hopes with a 4-3 Sky Bet Championship win over Norwich.Four penalties were awarded - and converted - in a game that saw the hosts recover from 3-1 down at the KCOM Stadium.Abel Hernandez scored twice from the spot on his first Hull start since August, with Jackson Irvine and Harry Wilson also netting as Norwich suffered a first defeat in eight games. In contrast to their midweek defeat to Millwall, when they conceded in the opening minute, Hull made a bright start as Jarrod Bowen slid in Markus Henriksen after three minutes, only for the Norwegian to fire straight at Angus Gunn. Two minutes later Wilson's cross found Hernandez unmarked eight yards out but he too failed to test Gunn as he headed straight at the Manchester City loanee.Norwich were finally punished for leaving a Hull player unmarked in their own area after six minutes, when Wilson's purposeful run led to him playing a through-ball for Irvine, who slotted low into the far corner.Nelson Oliveira, back in the Norwich side after being dropped from the squad on Tuesday for a poor attitude in training, fired high and wide on the turn with the visitors' first chance.Hull continued to control, with Wilson's tame shot too close to Gunn after he danced past two defenders in the 11th minute.Norwich's equaliser came against the run of play after 18 minutes, with David Marshall - making his first league start of the season in goal - needlessly charging out and bringing down Oliveira on the edge of the area. Referee Tim Robinson consulted with his assistant before ruling the initial contact was inside the box, with Maddison making no mistake from 12 yards.A minute later the Canaries went ahead, with England Under-21 international Maddison cutting inside Ola Aina before firing a low shot past Marshall, who should have done better.Norwich were awarded a second penalty in the 38th minute after Ondrej Mazuch needlessly bundled Onel Hernandez over in the area with the winger seemingly going nowhere, with Maddison slotting the ball into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick.Three minutes later Hull were back in it after being given a spot-kick of their own after Jamal Lewis pushed Bowen, with Abel Hernandez converting.Referee Robinson continued to take centre stage after the break, pointing to the spot in the 52nd minute after spotting an infringement as a Sebastian Larsson free-kick was cleared.Uruguay striker Abel Hernandez smashed the ball into the roof of the net to equalise.Hull were once again doing all the pressing, and only two fine saves from Gunn denied Bowen and substitute Frazier Campbell after 63 minutes, with Wilson's follow-up blocked by Timm Klose.Wilson slipped Bowen in on the right two minutes later, but Gunn was alert again to tip the ball wide of his near post, while at the other end Onel Hernandez miscued after breaking clear in the box.The impressive Wilson put Hull ahead in the 71st minute, the Liverpool loanee jinking past a defender before firing in at the par post from six yards.Campbell headed at Gunn from six yards out late on, while Aina failed to find a finish after a storming run from his own half, and at the other end Marshall was alert to keep out Grant Hanley's last-minute header.

Millwall beat Hull to record fifth successive away win

Millwall recorded a fifth straight away win in the Sky Bet Championship with a 2-1 victory at Hull.George Saville scored after just 51 seconds and Jake Cooper added a second before half-time, but the visitors were made to sweat after the returning Abel Hernandez pulled one back with 11 minutes left. The Lions held on to extend their unbeaten league run to 10 games and hand Nigel Adkins a first home defeat in charge of Hull.It took the visitors less than a minute to open the scoring. Jed Wallace picked up a loose ball on the right and chipped in to Lee Gregory, whose clever back-heel teed up Saville to slot in his eighth goal of the season.Millwall did not sit on their lead and Tom Elliott, recalled to the side for the first time in a month, tested Allan McGregor with a fierce drive from the right of the area in the seventh minute.McGregor also had to push away a snapshot from Gregory as the home crowd grew restless early on.Hull gradually grew into the contest and had their first sight of goal in the 17th minute. Markus Henriksen delivered a fine cross from the left but Jackson Irvine steered his header narrowly wide of the right post. They went closer four minutes later when Jarrod Bowen's spectacular drive from the edge of the area came back off the crossbar.Kamil Grosicki was then denied by a fine sliding block from Mahlon Romeo before Sebastian Larsson fired over from a free-kick.But 12 minutes before the break the visitors doubled their lead when Cooper, on his 50th Millwall appearance, looped a header over McGregor from Ben Marshall's corner.Hull looked to hit back before half-time but Ola Aina could not keep his shot down after the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box following a Larsson corner. In a quiet start to the second half, Bowen shot straight at Jordan Archer before Gregory forced a similarly comfortable save out of McGregor at the other end.The home fans found their voice when Adkins brought on Hernandez before the hour mark. The striker had been sidelined since August with an Achilles injury. And with 11 minutes left he brought the game to life with a close-range finish after fellow substitute Harry Wilson's left-wing cross found a way through the box.Hull pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, firing a barrage of crosses into the visitors' area, but Neil Harris' side held on through five minutes of stoppage time to continue their run.

Hull end nine-game winless run with victory at Nottingham Forest

Hull ended a run of nine Sky Bet Championship games without a win as they notched a rare success on the road, 2-0 at Nottingham Forest.Forest's last win over Hull at the City Ground had come in 1977, when Brian Clough was in charge - and they rarely looked like emerging triumphant against Nigel Adkins' side, from the moment the visitors took the lead in the ninth minute. That goal came via a Jon Toral header - less than a minute after he had seen a penalty saved by Costel Pantilimon - with Harry Wilson sliding home the second in the 38th minute. It continued a frustrating start to life for Aitor Karanka as Forest manager, with the Spaniard having now lost five of his first six games in charge. But it was a change in fortunes for the Tigers, who had collected only 11 points from their previous 33 away games, with their last away success having been at Barnsley in October.Forest made a bright start to the game, pinning Hull back into their own half, but the Tigers were to draw blood with their first meaningful attack. When Wilson cut across Eric Lichaj in the box, referee Oliver Langford judged that the Forest man had used a hand to impede his progress, and pointed to the spot.Toral planted the ball on the spot and looked confident enough, but Pantilimon had other ideas, diving low to his right to claw away his penalty, with Joe Worrall clearing the loose ball over the bar.If Forest thought the job was done, they were mistaken, however. Seb Larsson delivered the resulting corner back into the danger zone and Toral had the time and space to send a simple header into the back of the net from five yards to give the visitors a ninth-minute lead.Apostolos Vellios drove a shot wide of the target before Matty Cash went agonisingly close to an equaliser. The Forest midfielder drove through two challenges on the edge of the box and, as space opened up, fired in a low shot that bounced away off the inside of the post. And, in the 38th minute, the Tigers took a stronger hold on the game by doubling their advantage with a goal on the counter-attack. Will Keane powered into space down the right and drove in a low ball across the face of goal and into the centre, where Wilson was arriving to drive it high into the net from close range.Forest introduced Lee Tomlin at half-time and he immediately tricked and flicked his way down the left flank, before curling a pass into the area that eluded both Vellios and Adlene Guedioura, with the latter feeling he had been pulled back as he tried to connect.Hull then saw Jarrod Bowen send a good chance over the bar, when he might have made it 3-0.Forest substitute Joe Lolley had a shot cleared off the line late on.

Preston North End 2-1 Hull City

Preston remain within three points of the Sky Bet Championship play-off places after recording back-to-back wins with a 2-1 victory against Hull at Deepdale. All the goals came in the first half as Greg Cunningham and an Alan Browne penalty brought Preston from behind after Jarrod Bowen scored the opener.Hull's winless streak in the league extends to nine matches as Nigel Adkins' side remain in the relegation zone. The Tigers had the first half-chance of the match after 27 minutes. Ola Aina broke down the right and his cross was only cleared as far as David Meyler, whose header back into the area just evaded Nouha Dicko. And the visitors were ahead two minutes later as a slick team move set Bowen free and his strike from the right edge of the area deflected off Cunningham and beyond Declan Rudd.Preston, however, responded quickly and were level after 36 minutes. Paul Gallagher whipped a corner in from the right and defender Cunningham powered a header from 12 yards back across goal and into the far corner. And Alex Neil's side were ahead in first half stoppage time. Billy Bodin, making his home debut, had a fierce effort pushed away by Allan McGregor before he burst forward again and was adjudged to have been brought down in the area by Fraizer Campbell.Browne stepped up and slotted straight down the middle to put Preston in front at the break. It was the hosts who started the second half on top as well, Ben Pearson releasing Callum Robinson who could not find the target from 12 yards due to pressure from Aina.Browne almost grabbed himself a second goal after 52 minutes with a swivelled shot from 12 yards which well parried low to his right by McGregor. It was all one-way traffic, with Preston looking for the goal to kill the game. It almost came on 65 minutes when Browne's low cross found Robinson at the near post, but he was denied at point-blank range by McGregor. That goal did not come, however, and Hull began to grow in confidence. Substitute Evandro had a chance to hit the target after 78 minutes but his header from eight yards was wide of the near post.It was a nervy finish but Preston held on for only their third win in their last 11 home games.

            Hull City 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Jarrod Bowen scored one and set-up another as Hull progressed to the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest at the KCOM Stadium.Forest had dumped holders Arsenal out in round three, but looked a shadow of that side as they put in a lacklustre display following manager Aitor Karanka's decision to make 10 changes from the side which won at high-flying Wolves last time out.The hosts made eight changes of their own, but Bowen was one of those to keep his place and showed why he has been linked with several Premier League clubs in a classy display, grabbing his 12th goal of the season before assisting Nouha Dicko.Apostolos Vellios struck two minutes from time but it was too little, too late for two-time winners Forest.Mustapha Carayol sent an early 20-yard effort wide for Forest, while at the other end Jordan Smith had to be alert to turn a low Markus Henriksen free-kick behind. The opening stages were largely disjointed - hardly a surprise given the wholesale changes made to both sides - but two moments of quality in as many minutes from Bowen brought the contest to life.First the 21-year-old latched onto Smith's wayward clearance and hit an audacious first-time lob which left the keeper stranded but came back off the face of the post.Hull had scored in just two of their last eight games but Bowen gave the hosts the lead after 18 minutes when he drove into the box and his deflected effort went in off the woodwork.Five minutes before the break Hull doubled their advantage, with Bowen again involved. The forward nodded Jackson Irvine's delivery back across goal and Dicko headed in off the post.Forest should have pulled one back almost immediately when Carayol found himself unmarked eight yards out only to head wide, while at the other end Bowen played in Adama Diomande but he dallied and his tame shot was comfortably cleared.Karanka made two substitutions at the break in a bid to find a way back into the contest but the home side remained in the ascendancy.A cleverly disguised Bowen pass freed Dicko seven minutes after half-time but Smith parried his low effort away, while at the other end Danny Fox saw his free-kick come back off the post.Michael Hector had to be alert to hack the ball clear after Hull keeper David Marshall spilled a Fox corner, while Hull should have put the game to bed when Joe Worrall carelessly gave the ball away and substitutes Kamil Grosicki and Will Keane linked up only for Smith to save the latter's effort.Former Manchester United player Keane was making his first KCOM appearance in over a year following a serious injury but was denied again when Smith kept out his shot on the turn with his feet.Marshall produced a fine reflex save to deny Worrall and Ben Brereton clipped the wrong side of the post from six yards out before Vellios converted a Matty Cash cross late on from close range to set up a tense finish.

              Sunderland 1-0 Hull City

Joel Asoro scored his maiden Sunderland goal on his first Championship start as they won a tense game between two sides relegated from last season's Premier League.Asoro's 20th-minute strike means goal difference is all that is keeping Hull above the bottom three and their hosts in it.Hull pushed hard for a second-half equaliser but could not match the moment of quality the Black Cats' youthful attacking players served up in the early stages. When they did test the home goalkeeper, Robbin Ruiter produced a point-blank save from David Meyler in added time.Sunderland started with an XI that had four academy graduates but only five league goals between them but the energy of their teenage strikers gave them a much-needed lift against a Hull side who were also low on form and confidence at kick-off.The Black Cats had spent all week trying to sign an on-loan striker - they agreed a deal with Derby for Chris Martin on Friday afternoon, but face fierce competition for the experienced Championship goalscorer. After drawing a blank they decided instead to give Sweden Under-21 international Asoro his full Championship debut, and it took just 20 minutes to pay off.Lee Cattermole set a tenacious tone in midfield and when he won the ball, George Honeyman played an excellent pass. Asoro had time to think about his finish and drilled it across Allan McGregor to give his side the lead.It was no more than Sunderland deserved for an excellent start which saw Honeyman, in the hole, linking well with fellow academy products Asoro and Josh Maja.Hull came more into the game during the final 15 minutes of the first half without translating it into work for Ruiter.Meyler shot straight at the Dutchman and Jon Toral hit his shot over when Seb Larsson pulled a corner back to him.The Black Cats were forced to absorb a lot of second-half pressure, but looked more likely to score from their counter-attacks.Fraizer Campbell, like Meyler and Larsson a former Stadium of Light player, missed a glorious chance to equalise midway through the second half, putting Evandro's left-wing cross well wide under pressure with the goal gaping.Bryan Oviedo had earlier made a stunning goal-line clearance from Michael Dawson, who was involved in a controversial incident with 12 minutes remaining which could have made the game safe for Sunderland.Asoro anticipated a penalty-area tackle from the defender, booked four minutes earlier for fouling the striker just outside the 18-yard box. Dawson tried to pull out of the challenge and despite the penalty appeals from the home crowd, referee Keith Stroud decided he had managed to do so, booking Asoro for a dive.Ruiter's save from Meyler prevented Hull from levelling and they have now taken nine points from a possible 45.

                Bore draw at Hull

Hull and Reading shared the points from a drab goalless draw at the KCOM Stadium between two sides struggling at the bottom end of the Sky Bet Championship.Hull's Jon Toral saw his late first-half effort chalked off for kicking the ball out of Vito Mannone's hands and Reading's Liam Moore then forced Allan McGregor into a fine double save as both sides struggled to find the spark needed to win this contest.Reading carved out the first real opening after seven minutes when they won a free-kick on the left which John Swift curled to the near post and McGregor got down low to his right to keep it out at the expense of a corner.Jarrod Bowen did well to chase down an overhit cross after 14 minutes but Nouha Dicko could not connect to his low cross as Hull threatened for the first time.Hull's Seb Larsson then saw his free-kick deflected wide for a corner but Toral's delivery from the right was headed away and Dicko fired a volley over as the home side started to get on top.Reading were forced into a change after 25 minutes when Swift went off injured with former Hull forward Sone Aluko taking his place.Moore had to head clear when Hull's Fikayo Tomori rose at the back post to head a deep cross from fellow full-back Ola Aina towards goal.Reading made a second enforced change on the half hour when former Hull defender Paul McShane was replaced by Tiago Ilori.Hull thought they had taken the lead five minutes before the break but when Toral finished off after Mannone had saved one-handed from Bowen referee Darren England disallowed it for kicking the ball out of the keeper's hands.Toral should have done better early in the second half but he missed his kick from a tight angle.Just before the hour Toral's cross found Bowen unmarked at the far post but after taking a touch he shot straight at Mannone from a narrow angle.McGregor made a fine double save Moore after 64 minutes. Moore's initial header from an Aluko corner forced the keeper to get down to save before McGregor deflected the follow up over the bar.Larsson curled a free-kick narrowly round the post and substitute Markus Henriksen saw his late shot blocked as Hull failed to find a winner their efforts perhaps deserved.

Gary Madine goal earns Bolton win against fellow strugglers Hull

Gary Madine's ninth goal of the season for Bolton secured a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Hull to lift Wanderers out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.Madine's previous strike earned Phil Parkinson's side all three points at Sheffield United last Saturday. And his 20th minute free-kick proved good enough to give the Trotters back-to-back wins in the Championship for the first time since Boxing Day 2014.Hull, who have not tasted victory at Bolton since 1935, have now won only one of their last 13 second tier games.Nigel Adkins' Tigers threw everything forward in search of an equaliser but Bolton held on for another priceless win and clean sheet on their 500th game at the Macron Stadium.Despite that confidence-boosting success at high flyers Sheffield United Parkinson made four changes to his starting line-up and also reverted to a 4-4-2 formation. Only four players started the corresponding fixture at the KCOM Stadium in August when Hull won 4-0.In contrast, Hull manager Adkins kept all but one of the starting 11 that drew 2-2 with Fulham 48 hours earlier with Markus Henriksen replacing Seb Larsson. In dreadful conditions, Hull settled quickest and forced three corners in the first 15 minutes.Wanderers were also forced into an early reshuffle when Karl Henry suffered a suspected muscle injury to be replaced by Josh Cullen. The on-loan West Ham youngster was one of Wanderers' best players in the win at Sheffield United and he was soon in the thick of the action. But after 20 minutes Wanderers took the lead with their first shot on target.Madine and Sammy Ameobi, restored to the team after missing the win at Bramall Lane, stood over a free-kick 20 yards from goal.Top scorer Madine whipped the ball in right footed, up and over the wall into the back of Allan McGregor's net.Hull responded well and Ben Alnwick saved from Jarrod Bowen and then pushed away a Jon Toral free-kick.In between, Parkinson was forced into a second change when skipper Darren Pratley succumbed to an earlier challenge.Filipe Morais replaced the ex-Swansea midfielder, leaving Bolton with only a final change for the remaining hour.Hull came close to equalising two minutes into the second period as Nouha Dicko drilled a low cross to the far post and Bowen crashed a shot against the woodwork.Without being a classic, the game was developing into an intriguing contest between two sides desperate for the points.Substitute Morais tested McGregor with a close range header from stand-in captain Josh Vela's cross from the right after 55 minutes. On the hour City made a double substitution with Fraizer Campbell and Larsson replacing Kevin Stewart and Dicko.Bowen had a close range shot blocked by Mark Beevers and substitute Evandro narrowly failed to get on the end of a Toral cross.Madine could have settled home nerves with an 88th minute header that flashed wide but the big striker's first half contribution made the difference.

Substitute Kamara Fulham's hero as Hull let it slip again

Substitute Aboubakar Kamara scored twice as Fulham came from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw at Hull.Jarrod Bowen and Nouha Dicko gave the hosts a deserved two-goal lead at the KCOM Stadium, but the Sky Bet Championship strugglers failed to cope with Kamara in the second half. The Frenchman scored a penalty three minutes after the interval and equalised with a well-placed finish late on.Hull's only change saw top scorer Bowen make his first start under Nigel Adkins, with Kamil Grosicki missing out with an ankle problem.Slavisa Jovanovic kept faith with the XI which won 4-2 at Cardiff on Boxing Day - but his side were well off the pace in the opening period. The hosts had already served notice of their threat from set-pieces prior to Bowen's opener, with Denis Odoi heading a Jon Toral free-kick over his own bar before Dicko deflected Sebastian Larsson's cross narrowly wide. The opening goal came after 32 minutes as Bowen prodded home at the back post after Fulham failed to deal with Toral's corner.Four minutes later Dicko smashed a left-footed effort into the roof of the net to double Hull's lead, with Toral again the provider - this time with a clever through-ball.Jokanovic had clearly seen enough and five minutes before half-time replaced Floyd Ayite and Sheyi Ojo with Neeskens Kebano and Kamara.Michael Hector fired over from 12 yards after Bowen's free-kick evaded the Fulham defence, before Kebano headed the visitors' first meaningful chance a fraction wide in first-half stoppage time.Dicko had a shot tipped over by Marcus Bettinelli at the start of the second half but three minutes later the Cottagers were handed a lifeline when Kamara was needlessly brought down by Hector inside the area. The Frenchman picked himself up to rifle the spot-kick past Allan McGregor.Ola Aina's powerful effort was kept out by Bettinelli, while at the other end Kebano's cross fell for former Hull midfielder Tom Cairney but Jackson Irvine was on hand to make a vital block.Kebano hit a tame effort straight at McGregor but Hull should have restored their two-goal cushion when Bettinelli parried Dicko's 70th-minute effort to Bowen, only for the forward to shoot straight at the goalkeeper.Kamara wasted a golden chance 11 minutes from time when he blazed over after Ryan Sessegnon had surged into the box, but converted with a cool finish following a slick move with five minutes remaining as Hull's habit of conceding late goals cost them dearly again.
