St Mirren stretched their lead at the top of the Ladbrokes Scottish Championship to 11 points following a hard-fought 2-1 win at third-placed Dunfermline.Cammy Smith opened the scoring for the Buddies after 13 minutes when he found the bottom corner for his 11th goal of the season following brilliant build-up play by Lewis Morgan.Former Rangers midfielder Nicky Clark levelled for Dunfermline four minutes after the restart with a close-range header after Jean Yves Mvoto knocked down Michael Paton's long free-kick.However, centre-back Jack Baird won the match for St Mirren with a powerful header from Kyle Magennis' far-post cross after 64 minutes and extended their unbeaten league streak to eight games.

Aberdeen made light work of William Hill Scottish Cup fourth-round opponents St Mirren as Ryan Christie scored twice in a 4-1 victory.An early Adam Rooney penalty nudged the Dons ahead before Christie netted either side of Gavin Reilly's strike for the visitors.Gary Mackay-Steven added a fourth after the interval for Aberdeen as their top-flight class told against the Buddies.The home side showed no sign of rustiness after their winter break, and were in front after just eight minutes. Greg Stewart teased Stelios Demetriou into a foul challenge inside the area, and Rooney fired home the resulting spot-kick.Stewart, who was showing good form prior to the winter break, was keen to respond to the challenge provided by the return to Pittodrie of Niall McGinn.The former Dundee man cut in from the left flank before stinging the palms of Craig Samson in the St Mirren goal with a powerful drive, which the keeper pushed away for a corner.Championship side St Mirren were keen to show the threat they could pose, and after 15 minutes Kyle Magennis worked space for a shot from Lewis Morgan's pass, but Joe Lewis was equal to it.They were soon two goals behind, as Mackay-Steven pulled Graeme Shinnie's pass back into the path of Christie, who placed a low, six-yard shot into the back of the net.The deficit was halved after 25 minutes. Demetriou dispossessed Stewart in the Aberdeen right-back area, and set up Morgan who saw his shot parried by Joe Lewis. Reilly was handily placed to turn home from close range.The two-goal lead was restored when Shay Logan pounced on a defensive error to stand a cross up for Christie to head home his second of the afternoon, another close-range finish.St Mirren could have come up with an immediate response as Morgan lofted an effort into the side-netting after Mark Reynolds' poor clearance left Lewis stranded.The second half was just over a minute old when Aberdeen struck for a third time as Mackay-Steven angled a superb drive from the corner of the box across Samson and into the corner of the goal.That killed the game as a spectacle, but there was some interest for the home support with the introduction of McGinn midway through the second half, and he almost provided a goal to boot, sending a half-volley just wide of the target.

Lewis Morgan boosts Buddies clear at the top with brace against Terrors

In-demand Lewis Morgan's brilliant double extended St Mirren's lead at the top of the Ladbrokes Championship as they defeated nearest challengers Dundee United 2-0 in Paisley.The Celtic target struck twice from outside the box as Saints moved five points clear of United, who have a game in hand.Morgan looks set to be sold in the coming days with Celtic one of several clubs interested but manager Jack Ross is confident he will remain on loan with the club for the remainder of the season. And the 21-year-old wide player provided further evidence that he could be the man to propel the Buddies to the title as he took his tally for the season to 12 goals in front of 6,214 fans.Craig Samson also played a key role for the hosts when he saved Paul McMullan's 13th-minute penalty after Mark Durnan was caught on the foot by Ian McShane's attempt to clear.Scott Fraser and Scott McDonald failed to make the most of half chances just before the break for the visitors but Morgan had shown glimpses of skill in wide areas and he came to the fore in the 59th minute.The Scotland Under-21 international cut inside two United players and drilled a powerful strike into the bottom corner from almost 25 yards after collecting a pass from a short free-kick.Morgan scored after another short free-kick in the 78th minute when he took a pass from Stephen McGinn after initially losing possession and fired into the far corner from 20 yards.United, who lost Fraser Fyvie to a cruciate ligament injury earlier in the week, saw fellow midfielders Willo Flood and Fraser limp off and Cammy Smith missed a good chance for a third goal.

St Mirren climbed to the top of the Ladbrokes Championship after coming from behind to beat Livingston 3-1.Dale Carrick sent the visitors into the half-time break 1-0 up but the Buddies rallied after the interval to take the points through goals from Lewis Morgan, Adam Eckersley and Ian McShane.Livingston went ahead after 30 minutes when Craig Samson could not hold Joshua Mullin's shot and Carrick turned home the rebound.The Buddies levelled six minutes after the restart when a short corner was played to Morgan who drilled his shot beyond Neil Alexander.And Morgan turned provider when St Mirren took a 66th-minute lead as he played in Eckersley to slot past Alexander.Victory was wrapped up from the spot when McShane converted after Declan Gallagher brought down Jack Baird.

Raith earn quarter-final place after surprise win over St Mirren

Scottish League One leaders Raith claimed a surprise 3-1 win against Championship table-toppers St Mirren to secure a quarter-final spot in the Irn-Bru Cup. It took 63 minutes for the opening goal to arrive as Gavin Reilly got on the end of a neat ball across from Dale Hilson to fire the Buddies in front.But their lead lasted just one minute as Lewis Vaughan equalised for the visitors.Raith went ahead in the 73rd minute as Greig Spence slotted in Vaughan's headed pass and it was 3-1 when Bobby Barr scored with a superb strike from distance.Inverness eased into the last eight with a 3-0 win over Peterhead.Caley Thistle took the lead after just 90 seconds as Liam Polworth let fly from distance and it was 2-0 early in the second half when Riccardo Calder slotted home from a Polworth pass.Young debutant Daniel Mackay sealed a comfortable victory with a stoppage-time header.Falkirk were 2-0 winners against Dunfermline, with Conrad Balatoni volleying them ahead after 19 minutes from a Joe McKee corner.Myles Hippolyte doubled their advantage just before the hour with a fine solo effort, flicking the ball over a defender and racing clear before driving the ball home.Dean Shields was sent off in the sixth minute of stoppage-time for a poor challenge on McKee.Cove Rangers' home tie against Crusaders was temporarily suspended midway through the first half as medics treated an official from the Northern Irish club.Play resumed and the visitors went ahead in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage-time when Michael Carvill turned home a Michael Dougherty pass.The home side's afternoon took another turn for the worse when Scott Ross was sent off for a second bookable offence.And Crusaders took full advantage, with Jamie Glackin making it 2-0 with a close-range finish from Carvill's cross and Declan Caddell sealing a 3-0 win in time added on.Stephen Dobbie scored twice as Queen of the South claimed a 3-1 extra-time win at Montrose.The home side opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when full-back Terry Masson slotted in from close range.Dobbie lashed in an equaliser with three minutes remaining to send the game to an extra 30 minutes, where Queen of the South took control.Birthday boy Lyndon Dykes rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 and Dobbie sealed victory with a shot from a tight angle in the dying seconds.In the first of the later kick-offs, Welsh side TNS cruised to a 4-0 win against Scottish League Two side Elgin.A fine solo goal from Greg Draper opened the scoring, Aeron Edwards headed home a second from a Jamie Mullan pass and it was 3-0 before half-time as Mullan's low drive beat the keeper.Draper's second of the game after the break sealed a convincing win.Dundee United left it late to snatch a 1-0 win at home to Linfield.Substitute Logan Chalmers fired in the rebound after Graham Taylor had seen a shot well saved by Gareth Deane.Taylor had hit a post five minutes earlier, while Aaron Burns spurned Linfield's best chance, heading wide from close range.

Morgan at the double as St Mirren return to winning ways

St Mirren returned to winning ways with a 3-1 home victory against Queen of the South.The Saints saw their five-match winning streak in all competitions ended by Scottish Championship leaders Dunfermline last weekend, but they got back on track on Sunday, with Cameron Smith and Lewis Morgan back on the score sheet.Smith opened the scoring after 24 minutes with his fifth league goal of the season, sliding a low shot beneath the goalkeeper. Morgan extended the lead three minutes later with an effort from the edge of the penalty area.Derek Lyle spurned a good opportunity for Queen of the South early in the second half before Morgan took his goal tally for the campaign to eight with another long-range strike.Stephen Dobbie worked home goalkeeper Craig Samson and the visitors got a goal back shortly afterwards when Jason Kerr headed home.Callum Fordyce threatened to reduce the deficit further, but Samson produced a good save as Saints regained second spot behind Dunfermline.

Partick Thistle 5-0 St Mirren

A first-half blitz ensured Partick Thistle got their Betfred Cup campaign back on track with a 5-0 victory over St Mirren.Steven Lawless and Blair Spittal struck twice and Kris Doolan was also on the score sheet in a one-sided affair at Firhill.Abdul Osman was sent off for the hosts shortly before the hour mark but it mattered little as they moved up to second in Group H, with Saints staring at an early cup exit.Alan Archibald's men opened the scoring on 12 minutes which set the tone for the match.Saints failed to clear their lines and Doolan, who looked offside, collected the ricochet off Spittal and produced a composed finish from inside the box.Chris Erskine should have doubled their lead when he was presented with a gift from Ian McShane, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Ross Stewart.However, the second goal soon arrived. From the resulting corner, Lawless played a one-two with Erskine in the box to drill the ball into the corner on 23 minutes.St Mirren had no answer to Thistle's slick link-up play in the final third and Lawless finished a lovely move on 34 minutes, sweeping the ball into the corner from 25 yards.Confidence was oozing through the Premiership side and Spittal curled in a delightful fourth from a free-kick on 38 minutes, leaving Saints boss Jack Ross bewildered.The only blot on Thistle's copy book was the sending off of Osman for a second bookable offence on Stephen McGinn.However, that failed to stop them from adding a fifth on the hour mark as Spittal converted from Erskine's delivery.McShane was denied a consolation for Saints towards the end with a stunning save from goalkeeper Tomas Cerny.ends
