South African club Cape Town City have appointed Bafana Bafana all-time top scorer Benni McCarthy as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

McCarthy replaces another former South Africa international, Eric Tinkler, who left the Cape Town club to join SuperSport United earlier this month.

The 39-year-old recently worked as an assistant coach at Belgian Pro League side Sint Truiden and has completed his UEFA A coaching licence.

He has long been linked with a move to a South African club in a managerial capacity having last played for Orlando Pirates in the PSL.

The UEFA Champions League winner with FC Porto in 2004 remains one of South Africa's greatest exports having also played for Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.

McCarthy was runner-up on the English Premier League scoring charts in the 2006-07 season with 18 league goals (24 in total) for Blackburn.
