Mamelodi Sundowns to meet Wydad Casablanca in CAF Champions League group-stage draw

The last two CAF Champions League winners will meet in the group stage of the 2018 event after Mamelodi Sundowns were pitted against holders Wydad Casablanca in Wednesday's draw in Cairo.

Pitso Mosimane's side are riding high in the South African top flight this season, where they're currently one point ahead of Orlando Pirates having played a game fewer, but they'll have their work cut out to advance from the group stage of Africa's premier club competition after receiving a tough draw.

Wydad, who thrashed Williamsville AC 7-4 on aggregate in the First Round, were arguably the team to avoid of the Pot 4 sides, while Horoya and AS Togo-Port represent banana skins after eliminating Generation Foot and Al-Hilal respectively in the last round.

As well as winning the Champions League with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Al Ahly in November, Wydad are also the reigning CAF Super Cup winners following a 1-0 win against Tout Puissant Mazembe in Casablanca last month.

The reunion affords Downs the opportunity to take a measure of revenge against the team that eliminated them on penalties from last year's CAF CL quarter final.

Ahly will meet Esperance in a replay of another one of last year's quarter finals after the pair were drawn out in Group A together.

They'll be joined by two of the tournament's surprise packages so far, with Township Rollers and KCCA FC the first representatives from Botswana and Uganda to reach the group stage.

The former will fear no one after eliminating Al Merrikh and Young Africans, while KCCA's exciting attacking lineup and artificial turf could prove troublesome for the North African heavyweights.

Mazembe are the favourites to progress from Group B, although they'll be wary of Difaa El Jadidi.

The Moroccans may not have much pedigree in Africa's premier club competition, but a shock aggregate triumph over Democratic Republic of Congo heavyweights AS Vita Club in the last round will have resonated with Les Corbeaux.

Algerian duo MC Alger and ES Setif complete the pool, with the pair set to meet in national derbies on May 15 and August 28.

Group D appears to be the most open of the four pools, as while Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia - winners in 2007 - are favourites to progress, top seeds ZESCO United looked vulnerable in their 2-2 First Round draw with ASEC Mimosas.

Could Angola's Primeiro de Agosto, or even first-timers Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland, reach the final eight?

The first matches of the group stage will begin on May 4, with the round set to conclude on August 29.
