Thibaut Courtois missed Golden Glove announcement after turning TV off early

Belgium's Thibaut Courtois turned off his TV before the end of the World Cup final because he did not want to see France celebrating -- and missed himself being named the tournament's top goalkeeper.

Courtois kept three clean sheets as Belgium finished third, losing to France in the semifinals before defeating England in the consolation game.

But after he and captain Eden Hazard criticised France's pragmatic style in the semifinals, saying their tactics had made the match "frustrating," Courtois had enough.

"I turned off my TV in the 94th minute so as not to see the French celebrating their title," Courtois told RTBF, adding that he missed hearing he had won the Golden Glove.

"When my friends told me it was me, I turned the TV back on and went back so that I could watch it 'live.' It's an incredible honour. I'm happy to have made a lot of saves to help the team, but that's not the most important thing. I wanted to go as far as possible."

Courtois has since apologised for his comments about France's tactics, but told RTBF he still could not bear to watch the end of the game, which France won 4-2 over Croatia in Moscow.
