Maradona mocked on Hand of God anniversary as Messi and Argentina suffer

While an entire nation grieved, there was one person who took immense joy in Argentina's hopeless capitulation against Croatia in the World Cup group stages on Thursday evening.

That man was Peter Shilton, who definitely still hasn't forgiven a certain former Argentina international for the tremendous wrong he did him over three decades ago.

Diego Maradona infamously deployed the "Hand of God" to beat Shilton at the World Cup in Mexico as England were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage on 22 June, 1986.

Indeed, the sight of Maradona looking absolutely distraught in the stands at the Nizhny Novgorod stadium was fuel for Shilton to aim a bit of karmic mockery at his nemesis on the 32nd anniversary of the day they first met.

"God was looking down on me this morning!" the former England goalkeeper, 68, guffawed.

Given that Maradona went on to win the 1986 World Cup with Argentina while fourth place in 1990 was the closest Shilton ever got, it's fair to say the former is probably still ahead on points.
