Fortuna Dusseldorf player made to ref girl's match after sexist comment

German side Fortuna Dusseldorf have taken the unorthodox step of forcing one of their players to referee a girl's match as part of his punishment for aiming a sexist comment at a female match official.

Shortly after picking up a second booking, Fortuna midfielder Kerem Demirbay reportedly insulted referee Bibi Steinhaus by telling her that women have no place in men's football as he trudged from the pitch during the latter stages of a recent 2. Bundesliga game against FSV Frankfurt.

According to The Telegraph, Steinhaus accepted Demirbay's personal apology when the player phoned her after the match. He then also issued a public apology via social media to say that he was "extremely sorry" for his conduct.

While Demirbay is still waiting to hear what his official discipline from the DFB will be (a five-match ban is likely), Fortuna saw fit to mete out punishment of their own by fining their man to the tune of two weeks' wages.

However, the club weren't finished there. They also forced the 22-year-old to referee a local all-girl's game as further penance.

Here's hoping he's learned his lesson.
