Which of the continent's performers in Europe's major leagues shone this weekend, and who flattered to deceive?

ENGLAND

Chelsea's Victor Moses was withdrawn after 54 minutes as Jose Mourinho masterminded Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Premier League leaders Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera found the net to boost the Red Devils' Champions League hopes while simultaneously fuelling belief at White Hart Lane that Tottenham Hotspur could yet win their first title since 1961.

Spurs are now only four points off the pace after their record-breaking 4-0 home win over Bournemouth, with Victor Wanyama making his return as a substitute for the home side and Benik Afobe and Lys Mousset both in action for the Cherries.

Without injured Senegal attacker Sadio Mane, Liverpool lacked their attacking verve but still won away at West Bromwich Albion, with Cameroon stopper Joel Matip a composed presence in the heart of the Reds' backline.

Yaya Toure and Kelechi Iheanacho were both in action as Manchester City won 3-0 at Southampton to stay in fourth, while Wahbi Khazri's goal direct from a corner helped bottom club Sunderland end their losing streak with a 2-2 draw against West Ham United.

ITALY

Juventus could have been forgiven for stuttering upon their return to Serie A action on Saturday after their eye-catching Champions League victory over Barcelona in midweek.

However, their barely broke a sweat as top met bottom and Pescara were dispatched in the battle of the Ghana internationals, as Sulley Muntari and Kwadwo Asamoah went head to head. Senegalese starlet Mamadou Coulibaly also featured for struggling Pescara.

Mohamed Salah contributed an assist as Roma fell further off the pace when they were held 1-1 by Franck Kessie's Atalanta, while Napoli remain two points off the capital club with a 3-0 victory over Udinese, with Kalidou Koulibaly playing 90 minutes for the home side.

Elsewhere, Nigerian forward Simy rescued a point for Crotone with an 81st-minute equaliser against Torino, while Omar El Kaddouri opened the scoring in Empoli's 2-1 triumph at Fiorentina.

SPAIN

La Liga's top two were made to work for their wins this week, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid taking all three points after 3-2 wins over Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijon respectively.

The pair of victories leave Real three points clear at the top, while Thomas Partey missed a penalty in Atletico Madrid's 3-0 victory over Osasuna as they remain 10 points off the top.

Elsewhere, Carlos Kameni wasn't able to repeat last week's heroics against Barca as Malaga fell to a 2-0 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna.

GERMANY

Naby Keita, one of the revelations of the Bundesliga season, found the net in RasenBallsport Leipzig's 4-0 victory over Freiburg, a triumph that guarantees their spot in next year's Champions League.

It could also fuel their faint title hopes, with lethargic Bayern Munich slipping up 0-0 at ten-man Bayer Leverkusen.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added Borussia Dortmund's third in their 3-1 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, a fine victory which came only four days after BVB's bus was attacked ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against AS Monaco.

FRANCE

Almamy Toure was withdrawn at half time as AS Monaco suffered a scare when their title bid was almost derailed by Dijon at home. A late masterclass from Radamel Falcao turned the tide in the home side's favour in the last 20 minutes, but the Monegasques appeared jaded after their midweek exploits against Borussia Dortmund.

Monaco's 2-1 victory keeps them three points abreast of Serge Aurier's Paris Saint-Germain, who demonstrated their class when Angel Di Maria inspired them to a 2-0 victory at Angers on Friday evening.

In third, OGC Nice remain firmly in the title hunt after coming from behind to beat Nancy at home, with Ivorian international Jean Seri scoring twice in a midfield masterclass to help Les Aiglons guarantee Champions League participation for the first time in their history.

The match between Nicolas N'Koulou's Olympique Lyonnais and Axel Ngando's SC Bastia was abandoned after a pitch invasion, while Ryad Boudebouz, Firmin Ndombe Mubele and Cheick Diabate all found the net in Saturday's bumper day of action.
