Malaysia aim to dethrone Thailand to win SEA Games gold medal

Malaysia say they won't alter their game plan when they take on defending champions Thailand in the Southeast (SEA) Asian Games men's football final on Tuesday in front of 80,000 fans at Shah Alam Stadium.

Both sides are approaching the gold medal match on the back of gruelling semifinals.

N. Thanabalan's header four minutes from time on Saturday gave the Malaysians a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Indonesia. At Selayang Stadium, the Thais needed a 96th-minute goal from skipper Chenrop Samphaodi to see off Myanmar by the same score.

"We will have the same approach as we did in our last five matches," Malaysia coach Ong Kim Swee told ESPN FC.

"I hope it will be a good final, and may the best team win. There are no favourites for this match, but playing at home in front of our home crowd we want to achieve the best result.

"Thailand will be tough as usual. They are a strong team, not only in the age group competitions but also their senior squad."

Thai forward Sittichok Kannoo had previously claimed that they'd rather meet Indonesia in the final because they are a "better" team than Malaysia.

But Thai assistant coach Naruephon Kaenson claimed the visitors meant no disrespect, and that his player merely expressed a personal opinion.

"It was just a prediction. We can all give our predictions before the game, but the results will tell after the game," Naruephon told ESPN FC.

"We are well prepared for the final, and there are no injury concerns. I am confident we can live up to expectations."

Malaysia forward S. Kumaahran is likely to miss the final through injury. But apart from the Penang forward, Ong does not have any other fitness concerns.

He could start with four-goal hero Thanabalan, alongside Jafri Firdaus Chew and Safawi Rasid. to lead the line for Malaysia.

Malaysia striker-turned-defender Adam Nor Azlin says that while the hosts have done well to come this far, the job is not done yet.

"We are ready to fight all the way for the cause. Thailand will be tough opposition, and I hope me and my teammates will be focused throughout the match," Adam said.

Thailand beat Malaysia 3-0 in last month's AFC U23 Championship qualifiers in Bangkok. But Ong's men still finished higher than the hosts in Group H to qualify for January's tournament in China.

Since that defeat, Malaysia have had a perfect record, with a six-game winning streak.

They won all their Group B matches against Brunei (2-1), Singapore (2-1), Myanmar (3-1) and Laos (3-1). Thailand also did well in Group B, with four wins and a draw.
