Reviewing Africa's deadline day transfers

There was always a sense, heading into transfer deadline day, that the truly big deals involving African players moving to the Premier League had been done earlier in the window.

It was always unlikely - despite bubbling rumours surrounding the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Hakim Ziyech and Kalidou Koulibaly all summer - that anything would materialise to match Naby Keita's move to Liverpool or Riyad Mahrez's switch from Leicester City to Manchester City.

Ultimately, it wasn't that kind of day, as barring a flurry of activity at Everton and Chelsea, and some big deals at Chelsea, it was the inactivity of heavyweights Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur that caught the attention.

However, there were several African movers involving Premier League clubs, several of whom could play a key role in deciding how the relegation battle unravels this season.

Jordan Ayew was the biggest African name to move on deadline day, as the Ghana international finally got the move away from Swansea City that he appeared to crave.

This one always appeared likely, as even though Fulham had been linked to his services, Crystal Palace had long seemed like favourites for the Ghana international.

His exit from Swansea was also inevitable, particularly after coach Graham Potter confirmed earlier this week that Jordan had not been turning up for training as he looked to force a move away from the Liberty Stadium.

There will always be questions about Jordan's attitude, but he's a useful addition to Palace this season and will be desperate to avoid a third relegation after dropping into the second tier with Aston Villa and Swansea.

That shouldn't be a concern this term, with the forward's output in the Prem - he netted seven goals last term - likely to complement the wide work from Zaha and Andros Townsend.

If Christian Benteke can rediscover his goalscoring form, the Eagles boast one of the best attacking rosters outside the top six.

Lower down the table, Premier League new boys Fulham were busy on deadline day, bringing in five new players including Cameroon's Frank-Andre Zambo Anguissa from Olympique de Marseille.

He joins Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Luciano Vietto, Sergio Rico and Joe Bryan in moving to Craven Cottage on deadline day, and could be the pick of the bunch - particularly if he can forge a midfield partnership with another new signing, Jean Michael Seri.

Zambo Anguissa is the kind of tenacious destroyer that Fulham needed alongside Seri to allow the midfield artist to work his magic, but £22.3 million appears a sharp outlay for the 22-year-old.

Another of the Prem's new boys, Wolverhampton Wanderers, also concluded a busy window with a move to bring John Kitolano to the club from Norwegian side Odds BK.

The Norway U-21 international - who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo - has been signed for Wolves' youth squad, so while he's unlikely to feature too prominently this season, he should be an intriguing long-term investment for the Old Gold.

Huddersfield Town, another side set for a long season, moved to solve one of the weak points of their squad with a deal to bring Isaac Mbenza to the club from Montpellier.

The Congolese wideman - who's represented Belgium at U-21 level - moves to Yorkshire on a season-long loan, although the Terriers do have the option to make the move permanent.

His eight goals in Ligue 1 last season is an encouraging return, and while he should improve the output offered by the likes of Elias Kachunga, Collin Quaner and the departed Tom Ince in wide areas, he didn't manage a single assist in the French top flight last season.

Is he the man to get the best out of forwards Laurent Depoitre and Steve Mounie, who were woefully starved of service last term.

Guinea-Bissau-born Domingos Quina was another African mover on deadline day, as he crossed from West Ham United to Watford for an undisclosed fee.

Hornets fans could rightly question why the club are investing in another central midfielder when there are glaring deficiencies elsewhere in the team - notably up front - but the Portugal U-20 international is a hot prospect.

His form with West Ham's U-23 teams have set him apart as one to watch for the future.

Dropping into the Championship, Lukas Nmecha has his first opportunity to sample life outside Manchester City's bubble after signing on loan at Preston North End.

The England U-21 international was involved in the City squad that competed in the International Champions Cup during preseason, notably leading the line on Mahrez's debut against Liverpool, but was unlikely to feature prominently this term.

As well as a better opportunity for playing minutes this season, Nmecha should enjoy life with Alex Neil's hungry young side as they look to build on last term's seventh-placed finish.

The Nigerian starlet will hopefully settle quickly at nearby Preston.
