Soweto Derby lags in comparison to other South African rivalries

The Soweto Derby will be played on Saturday as title-chasing Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates seek to hang onto the coat tails of Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Recent Soweto Derby matches, comfortably the most watched fixture on the South African football calendar, have failed to live up to the hype.

It has turned into more of a social gathering where the high-society players like to be seen, rather than an on-field spectacle.

However, how does the high-profile fixture really stack up in terms of entertainment to the other current local derby games that are played in South Africa's elite league? KweséESPN takes a closer look.

KAIZER CHIEFS VS. ORLANDO PIRATES

Last 10 games:

Chiefs won 2

Pirates won 2

Drawn 6

Chiefs goals 6

Pirates goals 7

Goals per game 1.3

This is the derby with the most drawn matches in recent years, with both clubs going into games aiming not to lose rather than looking for the win.

A paltry 1.3 goals per game have been scored in the last 10 matches, with four of those games ending 0-0. It's comfortably the worst among the local rivalries.

The record between the sides has been even, with two wins each.

AJAX CAPE TOWN VS. CAPE TOWN CITY

Last 4 games:

Ajax won 0

City won 4

Drawn 0

Ajax goals 0

City goals 6

Goals per game 1.5

These two sides have only met on four occasions since the formation of Cape Town City at the start of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season.

Still, a pattern has emerged, with City winning all four of the games and Ajax yet to even score a goal in the more than six hours of football they have played.

They have yet to produce a real classic yet, though the game played last month and won 1-0 by City was highly entertaining.

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC VS. FREE STATE STARS

Last 10 games:

Celtic won 2

Stars won 4

Drawn 4

Celtic goals 10

Stars goals 9

Goals per game 1.9

This is a provincial derby in the Free State between two sides who have struggled a bit in recent years, though Stars have been much better in this campaign.

They hold the edge over the last 10 games, though the average score in that period is a disappointing 1-1.

AMAZULU VS. LAMONTVILLE GOLDEN ARROWS

Last 10 games:

AmaZulu won 6

Arrows won 3

Drawn 1

AmaZulu goals 14

Arrows goals 11

Goals per game 2.5

This Durban Derby almost always produces goals, with AmaZulu having had the better of their local rivals in recent years, this despite their relegation in 2015.

They are averaging 2.5 goals per game, with eight goals between the sides in their two league matches this season.`

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS VS. SUPERSPORT UNITED

Last 10 games:

Sundowns won 8

SuperSport won 0

Drawn 2

Sundowns goals 21

SuperSport goals 4

Goals per game 2.5

The recent gold standard for derby games in South Africa, this was once a fixture that was evenly fought, but Sundowns have enjoyed huge dominance in recent times.

The average goals per game figure of 2.5 is almost double that of the Soweto Derby and the games tend to be hugely entertaining as this derby does not come with the same pressure as that between Chiefs and Pirates.

SuperSport's last win in this fixture came five years ago with a 1-0 league success.
