Who were the best and worst of Africa's performers across Europe's major leagues this weekend?

ENGLAND

Wilfried Zaha returned to action in some style this weekend, playing his first game since the opening day of the season as he helped Crystal Palace to secure a mammoth result against reigning champions Chelsea.

The Ivorian international became the first Palace player to find the net this season as he scored a 45th-minute winner after Tiemoue Bakayoko's strike had cancelled out Cesar Azpilicueta's own goal.

Palace may remain bottom of the table, but their victory offers the kind of hope that has been completely absent so far this term.

Plaudits must also go to Anglo-Nigerian wonderkid Tammy Abraham, who netted twice - after working well in tandem with Jordan Ayew - as Swansea City beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 at the Liberty Stadium.

Mohamed Salah was a lively and inventive presence for Liverpool as they hosted Manchester United at Anfield, but wasn't able to break the deadlock as the two Northern juggernauts played out a 0-0 stalemate.

Both remain behind Manchester City in the table, with the Sky Blues flexing their muscles with a rampant 7-2 demolition of Stoke City at the Etihad Stadium. Yaya Toure came off the bench for the home side, while Mame Biram Diouf found the net for the Potters.

FRANCE

Lyon pipped AS Monaco 3-2 in the weekend's heavyweight clash on Friday night, where, despite an underwhelming defensive display, Keita Balde and goalscorer Adama Traore impressed for the reigning champions.

Wahbi Khazri was sent off for Stade Rennais away at Guingamp, where Moustapha Diallo opened the scoring for the hosts as they ran out 2-0 winners, while Adama Niane struck a 93rd-minute penalty as Troyes nabbed a late equaliser in a 2-2 away at LOSC Lille.

Cameroonian forward Karl Toko Ekambi opened the scoring as Angers beat Caen 2-0 away, and Prejuce Nakoulma scored his first goal of the season when he cancelled out Malcom's opener in Nantes' 1-1 draw away at Bordeaux.

His compatriot, Bakary Kone, was at the centre of a thriller at the Stade de la Meinau, scoring an own goal to given Marseille a 2-1 lead against Strasbourg, before levelling the contest on the hour mark with an effort for his new employers.

The two sides ultimately played out a thrilling 3-3 draw that leaves Marseille in fourth, eight points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

ITALY

Franck Kessie proclaimed before Sunday's Milan derby that it was a 'must-win' game for AC Milan against their city rivals Inter.

However, the Ivorian powerhouse was replaced at half time with the Rossoneri 1-0 down, and they weren't able to turn things around, with Mauro Icardi's hat-trick condemning Vincenzo Montella's side to another big loss.

Moroccan maestro Adel Taarabt found the net for Genoa - his first goal of the season - in their 3-2 victory away at Cagliari, while Kwadwo Asamoah was restored to Juventus' starting XI for their home match against Lazio.

Unfortunately for the Ghana international, he wasn't able to influence proceedings, as Juve fell to a shock 2-1 defeat - their first loss at home since August 2015.

SPAIN

Cedric Bakambu continued his fine start to the season by netting twice as Villarreal won 2-1 away in Girona. The Congolese frontman's strikes - both coming inside the first 20 minutes of Sunday's match - takes his tally up to seven in seven this season, and leaves the Yellow Submarine in eighth.

Thomas Partey was introduced 17 minutes from time for Atletico Madrid in their heavyweight showdown with Barcelona.

The Rojiblancos were leading 1-0 after Saul Niguez's 21st-minute strike, but Partey couldn't help them preserve their advantage, as Luis Suarez levelled affairs nine minutes after the Ghana international's introduction.

The draw leaves Atleti in fourth, one point behind Real Madrid, for whom Achraf Hakimi was in action as they won 2-1 away at Getafe following goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

GERMANY

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been in irresistible form so far this season, and netted his ninth and tenth goals of the Bundesliga campaign as Borussia Dortmund hosted RasenballSport Leipzig.

However, despite the Gabon international's heroics, he wasn't able to help BVB from falling to a crushing 3-2 home defeat against their would-be title rivals.

Naby Keita was close to his vibrant best during the first half, but was replaced at half time - with Leipzig leading 2-1. Despite only playing for a half, he still managed more interceptions than any other player on the pitch!

The impressive Salif Sane found the net for Hannover in their 2-1 home defeat by Kevin-Prince Boateng's Eintracht Frankfurt, while Congolese attacker Chadrac Akolo continued his excellent start to the campaign with a 94th-minute winner for Stuttgart against FC Cologne.
