Who were Africa's star men in the Champions League this week?

Which of the continent's stars impressed during the midweek Champions League fixtures?

Dimitri Oberlin: FC Basel secured perhaps the result of the week as they trounced former European champions Benfica 5-0 in front of their own fans, with outstanding performers across the board for home side.

The outstanding individual was surely teenage wideman Oberlin, who marked his first-ever start in the UCL group stage with a double.

He persistently terrorised the Benfica defenders throughout the contest - registering three successful dribbles - and his pace in the final third offered hope that the reigning Swiss Super League champions could yet reach the Last 16 for the third time in their history.

Wissam Ben Yedder: Arguably the finest performance by any player in the UCL this week - let alone one of Africa's stars - came from Ben Yedder. The Franco-Tunisian frontman struck a hat-trick as Sevilla thumped Maribor 3-0 to move up to top spot in Group E.

The attacker didn't wholly convince in his maiden La Liga campaign last term after moving from Toulouse - scoring 11 goals in 31 outings - but showcased both his intelligence with the ball and smart movement off it as the Slovenians were defeated on Wednesday evening.

As well as his goals, he also created four scoring opportunities for his teammates, and is second only to Harry Kane in the goalscoring charts.

Now 27, Ben Yedder recently expressed his disappointment at being continually overlooked by France, but could World Cup qualification for Tunisia tempt the versatile attacker to throw his hat into the ring for the Eagles of Carthage.

Vincent Aboubakar: After being something of a figure of fun for his profligacy during the Confederations Cup in Russia earlier this year, Aboubakar has ensured that defenders will be taking him very seriously indeed after a sterling start to the season.

The Cameroon frontman already has six goals in seven outings in the Portuguese top flight, and after missing FC Porto's Champions League opener due to suspension, he returned in some style away at Monaco on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark following a cagey opening two minutes between the two sides, and then doubled the visitors' lead 21 minutes from time with a close-range finish after Moussa Marega's cross.

He didn't contribute too much beyond the goal - none of Porto's other starters made fewer touches - but the Portuguese giants will surely be delighted that the previously wantaway forward's proposed move to Marseille this summer never came to pass.

Olivier Ntcham: Brendan Rodgers will surely be delighted with Ntcham's contribution in Celtic's 3-0 victory over Anderlecht on Wednesday after parting with approximately £4.5 million to bring the Franco-Cameroonian midfielder to Glasgow this summer.

Ntcham's caught the eye immediately after he made his Hoops debut during the qualifying round, and while he remained rusty, there was hope that the Manchester City flop could succeed where Eboue Kouassi has - up till now - failed.

Against Anderlecht, paired alongside gritty Celtic skipper Scott Brown in the heart of the park, he delivered a performance that showcased the breadth of his offensive qualities.

His delightful angled ball to play in Kieran Tierney ahead of Leigh Griffiths' opener was particularly superb, while he began to impose himself - demonstrating his combative side - and cutting out the errors as the Bhoys imposed themselves on Sporting.

Sadio Mane: While Liverpool have no shortage of talented options in the final third, Mane offers something that their other artists don't, and last season - as well as this - there's often been a noticeable drop off for the Reds when he's not been present.

During his domestic suspension, Jurgen Klopp's side were held by Burnley and eliminated from the League Cup by Leicester City, and were arguably fortunate to beat the Foxes in Premier League action.

While Mane wasn't able to help them past Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday - with the Merseysiders forced to settle for a 1-1 draw - he was arguably Liverpool's star man.

The Senegal international contributed the assist for Philippe Coutinho's goal, a joint-game-high two key passes, and completing five dribbles - more than any other player on the pitch.

Can he help Liverpool shake their recent lethargy when they travel to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday?
