Belgium striker Christian Benteke fears he could miss World Cup place

Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke has said his difficult season at club level could mean he misses out on a place in Belgium's World Cup squad.

Benteke has scored twice in 28 games for Palace, who have struggled in the Premier League. He has not played for Belgium this season and was omitted from the squad for the recent friendly against Saudi Arabia.

He said he felt he was playing well despite a lack of goals but would understand if his recent statistics meant national boss Roberto Martinez did not take him to Russia.

"In the past I have had just one opportunity on the match and I scored," he said. "This year, I feel more involved in the game, I make more effort but I'm not rewarded.

"I do not say it's the fault of others. I'm clumsy, lack of lucidity, lack of success too. But I will work.

"I knew it was 50-50 [being in the squad against Saudi Arabia]. I'm no longer a kid, I also knew the reason -- it's my statistics and not the overall quality of my matches.

"The positive was that it allowed me to stay at my club and to be able to work on knowing why I was not taken in, and to address it.

"If I had to miss it [the World Cup], it would hurt but I would recover. For my family, my cousins, it would be different. It is also their dream."
