Kotoko involved in accident, casualty reported

Record Ghana Premier League winners Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been involved in a road accident on their return from a league game, with at least one death reported and numerous injuries.

Kotoko coach Steve Polack and his assistant, the team's former captain Godwin Ablordey, are among the injured, KweséESPN has reliably been informed.

The club said on Twitter that the accident occurred around 21:45 GMT in Nkawkaw when the bus transporting the players back to Kumasi after a league defeat to Inter Allies in Accra ran into a stationary truck. The club statement did not touch on casualties, but the entire travelling contingent were transported to the Holy Family Hospital for treatment and further checks.

The accident is now certain to push back Kotoko's meeting with Hearts of Oak which was due to be played on Sunday.

The Ghana Football Association have released a statement on the accident, saying: "The Ghana Football Association has learnt with sadness, an accident involving the team bus of Kumasi Asante Kotoko on their return to Kumasi following their Premier League match with Inter Allies in Accra on Wednesday.

"The GFA and the entire football fraternity is devastated by the sad development. The GFA has established contact with the club, and our thoughts and prayers are with Kumasi Asante Kotoko, particularly the injured officials and players, who are currently receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw.

"We urge all to pray for our brothers at this difficult moment."
