Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has suffered ankle ligament damage but could be back before the end of the season, the club said on Monday.

Egypt international Elneny was taken off on a stretcher during Sunday's 4-1 over West Ham after landing awkwardly and rolling his ankle, sparking fears over his participation at the World Cup.

An Arsenal statement said the midfielder had undergone scans on both Sunday and Monday and added: "We can confirm that Mo Elneny has sustained ligament damage to his left ankle.

"We are hoping that Mo will available for Arsenal again this season, and we are keeping in regular contact with the Egyptian Football Association."

Arsenal have seven matches of the season remaining if they reach the Europa League final on May 16, with the World Cup beginning on June 14.
