Argentina's Football Association (AFA) will announce this week if Jorge Sampaoli will continue at the helm of the national team, according to federation vice-president Daniel Angelici.
Under Sampaoli, Argentina were eliminated from the World Cup in the round of 16 by France after narrowly getting out of a group that was topped by Croatia and also included Nigeria and Iceland.
The 58-year-old, who had served as coach of Chile, took the reins of Argentina last summer and is under contract until 2022.
Sampaoli met Argentina's federation president Claudio Tapia and Angelici on Monday to talk about the team's performance at the World Cup. After the meeting, the AFA announced that Sampaoli will manage the Under-20 team in the L'Alcudia tournament this month and his future will be re-evaluated at the end of this competition.
However, Angelici, when asked how the meeting had gone, told Fox Sports Argentina: "The president and the coach will give a news conference later this week."
When asked if Sampaoli's future will be known in that news conference, he said: "Yes but we have to wait."
AFA chief Tapia said prior to the tournament in Russia that Sampaoli would remain in charge even if his country "were eliminated in the first round of the World Cup."
Sampaoli was a big hit as the head coach of Chile, guiding the team at the 2014 World Cup -- where they lost to hosts Brazil on penalties in the round of 16 -- and winning the Copa America in 2015, claiming the title with a victory over Argentina in the final.
Argentina did not book their spot in Russia until their final qualifier, a 3-1 win at Ecuador on Oct. 10.
The Albiceleste had gone into the tournament having lost three straight major finals, two in the Copa America and also the 2014 World Cup.
Sampaoli's side drew 1-1 with Iceland in their World Cup opener before falling 3-0 to Croatia. They beat Nigeria 2-1 to qualify as second in their group before losing 4-3 to France in the first knockout round.
Under Sampaoli, Argentina have won seven, drawn four and lost five of their 16 games.
Clarin reported details of Sampaoli's contract and said the AFA would have to pay $8.62 million to Sampaoli as compensation if they decide to sack him now. However, that figure would be reduced to $1.58m if they do so after July 2019.
