NAIROBI, Kenya -- Kenya face sanctions for a riot that stopped play for more than 30 minutes on Sunday and forced police to fire tear gas into the stands to get angry fans out of the stadium in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea Bissau.
Kenyan fans threw stones and other missiles at the Guinea Bissau bench, and at the fourth official on the sidelines, following a disputed goal for the visitors at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. Guinea Bissau won 1-0 to give Kenya little chance of qualifying for next year's African Nations Cup.
The trouble started when Zimbabwean referee Norman Matemela awarded the winning goal to Guinea Bissau in the 81st minute, despite protests from Kenya players that the ball hadn't crossed the line.
Matemela stopped the game as missiles rained down and riot police moved onto the field to protect the players and officials. Police then fired tear gas at the rioting supporters. Most of those fans had been removed from the stadium by the time the referee restarted the qualifier for the final nine minutes.
The victory through Mendes Suares' contentious goal pushed Guinea Bissau top of the group, ahead of Republic of Congo and Zambia, which drew 1-1. Kenya are bottom of the standings with one point from four games.
Also Sunday, the Confederation of African Football fined Chad $20,000 after it withdrew midway through the final qualifying stage. Chad were also banned from the next African Nations Cup in 2019, CAF said.
CAF offered no explanation for Chad's withdrawal after it had played three games in the decisive group stage, but the team has had problems raising money to travel for qualifying matches before. Chad's withdrawal resulted in the African soccer body canceling all results involving its team in Group G, which also contains Egypt, Nigeria and Tanzania. Chad had lost all three of its games.
