Champions League fantasy transfer market: Replacing Lionel Messi

AFP/Getty Images

The first two rounds of the Champions League group stage produced plenty of drama. Only five of the 32 teams won both of their games: Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid in Group A, Barcelona and Inter Milan in Group B, and Juventus in Group H.

Dortmund and Atletico, and Barca and Inter, will face each other this time around. And Juventus have a relatively tough matchup as well, against Manchester United. So you'll probably be looking at other games when you build your fantasy team.

Here are my picks for Matchweek 3:

Tier 1 forward

Add: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

I was going to pick Lionel Messi here, before he suffered a fractured arm on Saturday. Now, this is a much tougher decision. Liverpool are the biggest favorites this week, playing at home against Red Star Belgrade -- a team that conceded six goals at Paris-Saint Germain in Matchweek 2. Salah scored his fourth Premier League goal of the season in a 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town on Saturday, and took four shots. I think he could erupt against Red Star.

Avoid: Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)

He scored a brace in a 3-1 home win over Club Brugge in Matchweek 2. But Atletico Madrid will face a much tougher opponent this time around, playing at Borussia Dortmund, the Bundesliga leaders. Also, Griezmann only has two goals in nine La Liga games this season, and took only one shot in a 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Saturday.

Tier 2 forward

Add: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

He had two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win at Wolfsburg on Saturday, which is encouraging. Lewandowski also took six shots in that game, and five of them were on target. Bayern Munich will be away on Tuesday, but are still heavy favorites against AEK Athens -- a team that conceded three goals at home to Benfica in Matchweek 2, and three at Ajax in Matchweek 1.

Avoid: Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

He's off to a great start this season, and had a goal and assist in a 4-0 win over Stuttgart on Saturday. But Reus only took one shot in that game. And Atletico Madrid have only conceded five goals in nine La Liga games.

Tier 1 midfielder

Add: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

He didn't start in the 2-1 loss to Levante on Saturday, but came on at halftime and took three shots, with two on target. Real Madrid are in very poor form -- winless in their past five games, having scored only one goal in the process. But I'm willing to overlook that, given that they'll be playing at home against Viktoria Plzen -- a team that conceded five goals at Roma in Matchweek 2, and two at home to CSKA Moscow in Matchweek 1.

Avoid: Paulo Dybala (Juventus)

He has the highest fantasy points per game average in this tier, thanks to his hat trick in a 3-0 win over Young Boys in Matchweek 2. But Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended for that game, which allowed Dybala to be Juventus' main man. Ronaldo will be back on Tuesday against Manchester United, and Dybala might not even start. He wasn't in the starting lineup for Juve's 1-1 draw with Genoa on Saturday, and didn't even get off the bench in their Champions League opener.

Tier 2 midfielder

Add: Marco Asensio (Real Madrid)

With Real Madrid being the second-biggest favorite in Matchweek 3, I'm going to double up on them here. I think both Asensio and Isco are good choices, as both are capable of a big performance against Viktoria Plzen. I'm leaning slightly towards Asensio because, if he starts, he'll be playing as one of the three up front and is a little more likely to score a goal.

Avoid: Lucas Moura (Tottenham)

He has the second-highest projected fantasy points total in this tier, but Moura has gone without a goal or assist in eight consecutive games now. He didn't take a single shot in Tottenham's 1-0 win at West Ham on Saturday, despite playing the full 90 minutes. And playing at PSV, who've won their first nine games in the Eredivisie, outscoring their opponents 36-3, shouldn't be easy.

Tier 3 midfielder

Add: Hirving Lozano (PSV)

He's been a big part of their success so far this season domestically, with eight goals and three assists in nine games ... including a goal and two assists in a 6-0 win over FC Emmen on Saturday. Lozano also had an assist in PSV's 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in Matchweek 2, plus three shots and five chances created.

Avoid: Maycon (Shakhtar Donetsk)

He scored a goal in a 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim in Matchweek 1, but didn't start in that game, only coming on in the 76th minute. Maycon started against Lyon in Matchweek 2, but only took two shots and had zero chances created, despite playing the full 90 minutes. And now his team will be up against a tougher opponent in Manchester City.

Tier 1 defender

Add: Andrew Robertson (Liverpool)

Here's an opportunity to double up on the biggest favorites of the week. Robertson has picked up two assists in Liverpool's first nine Premier League games, and also had an assist in their 3-2 win over Paris-Saint Germain in Matchweek 1. He should have plenty of opportunities to get forward against Red Star Belgrade.

Avoid: Jordi Alba (Barcelona)

He has the highest fantasy points per game average in this tier, but Alba's value is diminished by Messi's absence. Also, Barcelona are facing a tough opponent in Inter Milan, who have only conceded one goal in each of their first two Champions League games.

Tier 2 defender

Add: Alex Telles (Porto)

He had an assist and five chances created in Porto's 1-0 win over Galatasaray in Matchweek 2. Telles also had a goal and an assist in seven Champions League games last season. And Porto are favored against Lokomotiv Moscow on Wednesday, despite playing away from home.

Avoid: Ismaily (Shakhtar Donetsk)

He already has a goal and an assist in two Champions League games this season, but they came against Hoffenheim and Lyon. Manchester City haven't looked great in their first two Champions League games, but they've only conceded three goals in nine Premier League games, so I wouldn't expect attacking returns from Ismaily on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper

Add: Alisson (Liverpool)

Liverpool have also only conceded three goals in nine Premier League games. And Red Star's expected goals totals in their first two Champions League games were 0.29 in a scoreless draw with Napoli, and 0.23 in the 6-1 loss to Paris-Saint Germain.

Avoid: David De Gea (Manchester United)

As good a goalkeeper as he is, De Gea has conceded 16 goals in nine Premier League games this season. Juventus have scored 19 goals in nine Serie A games, and five goals in their first two Champions League games. And you know Ronaldo is going to be fired up, playing against one of his former teams at Old Trafford.

Captain

For all the talk of Salah's relatively poor form compared to last season, he still has four goals and an assist in the Premier League, and is third in Premier League fantasy points behind only Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero. Playing at home, against one of the weakest teams in the competition, he's my choice.
