Raphael Honigstein's fantasy picks for Champions League Matchweek 3

Fantasy, Fantasy Soccer

The Champions League is back this week, and what better way to celebrate than by signing up for ESPN's brand new fantasy game. It doesn't matter that we're in Matchweek 3, your head-to-head league begins when you sign up.

Not sure who to have in your eight-man team? No problem, we've enlisted the help of ESPN FC's Germany writer Raphael Honigstein to pick out a player from each of the tiers.

Check out our detailed breakdown of the scoring system to make sure you're picking your team with this in mind. Get your mates involved ahead of Matchday 3 and fill up a league before the action kicks off on Tuesday.

You can start whenever you want -- and that applies not only to our Champions League game but to the Premier League, La Liga and Liga MX versions too.

Each matchweek, you'll submit a new team, or you can actually stick with the same eight -- but only if they are still in the same tiers. So make sure you're always checking ahead of the matchweek and selecting the best team to beat your rival.

Let's take a look at who Raph has picked. And, just as importantly, why.

This is what Raph had to say:

Tier 1 forward -- Roberto Firmino: Liverpool are at home to Red Star Belgrade and with doubts over the fitness of Mohamed Salah, I reckon Firmino will be the main man. Make him captain, too.

Tier 2 forward -- Edin DzekoThe Roma forward rediscovered his scoring touch by netting a hat trick on Matchday 2, and he can do more damage at home to CSKA.

Tier 1 midfielder -- Sadio Mane: He's running a little cold right now but his luck could well change.

Tier 2 midfielder -- Dani Parejo: Young Boys look like one of the leakiest sides in the Champions League this season, so plenty of scope to get points for Parejo of Valencia.

Tier 3 midfielder -- Pizzi: The Benfica star is the best-performing player in this tier so far, and there could be more points on offer at Ajax.

Tier 1 defender -- Andrew Robertson: The Liverpool defender will almost play like a winger against deep-defending Red Star, so there's definitely the opportunity for an assist or two.

Tier 2 defender -- Alejandro Grimaldo: Another Benfica player who could pick up some good defensive points against an Ajax side that have already netted twice against Bayern Munich.

Goalkeeper -- Alisson: Surely the Liverpool goalkeeper is all-but-guaranteed a clean sheet when they host Red Star, who are going to have few chances.
