ESPN takes a look at some of the best and quirkiest stats to come out of the Singapore Grand Prix.

MARINA BAY, Singapore -- Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead to a season-high 40 points with a comfortable win at the Singapore Grand Prix, the fourth time he has won on the streets of Marina Bay.

The Mercedes driver was rarely troubled in what was his seventh victory of the 2018 season, holding off Max Verstappen in second place and finishing over 30s ahead of title-rival Sebastian Vettel in third after Ferrari once again let a golden opportunity for a race win slip through its fingers.

Stat focus: Hamilton wins quickest race at Marina Bay

Since being added to the Formula One calendar back in 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix has almost always been the longest race of the season, often going close to -- or even over -- the two hour race limit.

But the 2018 edition, while still long, smashed the record for the quickest in Singapore's 11-year history. Hamilton took the chequered flag and stopped the clock with an official race time of one hour, 51 minutes and 11 seconds, a time which was over four and a half minutes quicker than what Nico Rosberg managed in 2016 -- previously the fastest race.

What was most impressive about the time was that it came with a Safety Car intervention. Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon's opening lap collision saw the pace car control the pack for four laps before returning to the pits. Without that break in the race the time could easily have been another three or four minutes quicker.

The increase in speed can be put down to a number of factors but mainly the new generation faster cars as well as the introduction of high-grip hyper-soft tyres for the first time in Singapore.

Some things you probably didn't know

As well as being the fastest Singapore Grand Prix in history, 2018's race also saw the lowest rate of attrition. Only Force India's Ocon failed to finish the grand prix with the other 19 drivers all managing to run until the chequered flag fell and fireworks lit up the Singapore night sky.

Hamilton's win in Singapore saw him open up a 40-point lead over Vettel in the drivers' championship. He is now the odds on favourite to win a fifth world title and should take comfort in the fact that six of the last seven winners of the Singapore Grand Prix have gone on to win the championship later that year.
