ESPYS 2022 -- Shohei Ohtani wins Best Athlete in Men's Sports

MLB

Add another trophy to Shohei Ohtani's collection.

The Los Angeles Angels star took home two major awards at the 2022 ESPYS on Wednesday night, including best male athlete and best MLB player. Ohtani, 28, beat out a tough field of superstars to take home best male athlete, including Stephen Curry, Aaron Rodgers and Connor McDavid.

"Congratulations to my fellow nominees. It's an honor to be in the same category as all of you," Ohtani said in a recorded speech. "You're the best at what you do. Have a wonderful evening and enjoy your afterparties."

Ohtani is currently the betting favorite to win the American League MVP -- in what would be his second time winning the award. Last year, the two-way star unanimously won the award, becoming the fifth player to do so since 2000.

In 2021, Ohtani batted .257 and racked up 46 home runs and 100 RBIs. On the mound, he pitched over 130 innings and went 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA. The Angels, however, failed to make the playoffs for the seventh straight season.
