One of Australia's most iconic sporting arenas is moving into the future with the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) opening an esports high performance centre.

The host of countless state and international cricket matches, domestic and Test rugby and rugby league matches and the AFL's Sydney Swans, the Moore Park venue will break new ground as it embarks on an exciting partnership with one of the world's fastest growing sports.

In a partnership with the University of Technology Sydney, the centre will host the League of Legends Oceania champions, LG Dire Wolves, and female development team Supa-Stellar.

"It will be a game changer to have Australia's leading esports professionals in a dedicated high performance centre in the same precinct as the best athletes and officials from the SCG and Allianz Stadium's traditional sports," Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust chief executive Jamie Barkley said.

"Our venues are rapidly expanding their technology offerings and partnering with professional esports entities and establishing the state of the art training centre presents an exciting opportunity."

The move will see the LG Dire Wolves and Supa-Stellar join a list of established Australian sporting brands in the precinct, including Sydney Roosters, NSW Waratahs, Sydney FC and Sydney Swans as well as governing bodies the NRL and Rugby Australia.

"We're excited to partner with the SCG Trust on the esports high performance centre which is an Australian first and will be a world-class facility," LG Dire Wolves owner David Harris said.

"It's an important step towards closing the gap with some of the top regions and becoming globally competitive in the esports space.

"Our partnership with other organisations in the precinct including the UTS sport science faculty will help develop young talent both inside and outside of the game."
