W2W4: 15-year-old Anish eyes shooting gold; Saina, Sindhu lead badminton charge

Badminton, Shooting

The athletics competitions get underway on Saturday, a busy day for the Indian contingent, where other Indians will be in action in shooting, boxing, bridge, archery, weightlifting, golf and badminton. Also watch out for the first real examination of the Indian women's hockey team.

Saina, Sindhu take badminton campaign forward

Following Kidambi Srikanth's shock elimination in the men's round-of-32, India will look up to PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, both of whom will be facing Indonesian opponents in the round-of-16. There will also be men's doubles action involving both Indian pairs -- Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty and Manu Attri/B Sumeeth Reddy.

Women's singles round of 16, men's doubles round of 16, 11:30 AM onwards

Athletes make their first mark

Athletics has been a strong point for India at the Asian Games and that trend should continue this time. Indian interest on the opening day will be with the hammer throw and 10,000m events in the women's section, while Tajinder Toor's personal best of 20.40m in the men's shotput should put him in medal contention.

Men's shotput final, 6:30 PM onwards

Women's 10,000m final, 6:30 PM onwards

Anish guns for gold

Anish Bhanwala created a sensation by winning the 25m rapid fire pistol event at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast earlier this year, and at 15, he still has some way to go before establishing himself as a consistent performer. Anish is placed third after the first day of qualification in the same event, and will be joined by compatriot Shivam Shukla on the penultimate day of shooting events.

Rani and co. face first proper test

The Indian women's hockey team have scored 29 goals, and are yet to concede. Expect that tempo to change when they face reigning champions South Korea, the most successful team in Asian Games history. Lack of familiarity will also not be a factor between the teams -- earlier this year the Koreans drew with India in the group stages of the Asian Champions Trophy at home in Donghae, before beating them 1-0 in the final.
