Olympic Sports

Star Kenyan steeplechaser Conseslus Kipruto will be among the names to watch when the 2018 African Athletics Championship takes place in Assaba, Nigeria from 1 to 5 August.

The 23-year-old Kipruto is among the 61-strong Kenya team which has been selected to represent the country at the 21st edition of the Championships.

Kipruto has proved to be a class apart in the 3000m steeplechase, winning gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, gold at the 2017 World Championship in London, and gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"The team of 61 boasts of having on board the who's who in Kenya's athletics cycle where Olympians, Commonwealth Games and World Champions are taking their expertise to the continental championships," said an Athletics Kenya release.

Besides Kipruto, middle distant star Elijah Manangoi, Javelin throw champion Julius Yego, who won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and 5,000metres World Champion Helen Obiri are also part of the squad. At the 2016 edition in Durban, South Africa, the hosts emerged top, while Kenya came second with a total of 24 medals that included 8 golds.
