Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei ruled out of African Championships

Olympic Sports

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has confirmed that Commonwealth Games double gold medallist Joshua Cheptegei will not participate the 2018 African Championships next month, due to injury.

In May, the middle distance star travelled to the Netherlands for treatment on his injured knee, and later said that even though he won gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m races, he regretted running two events on the Gold Coast.

"Cheptegei is still out nursing an injury he aggravated during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia. The technical team has left him out because he is not ready," Dominic Otuchet, president of the UAF, told KweséESPN.

"It is unfortunate we shall not have Cheptegei on the team. But it is also important that he gets enough time to heal so that he can return stronger."

The flagship event, which attracts the continent's top athletes, will take place from August 1-15 in the Nigerian city of Asaba.

Uganda's team will feature Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat, who won gold and bronze respectively in Australia in April, while Jacob Kiplimo will also make the trip to Nigeria.

The 20-athlete Ugandan team is expected to start training next week, with the sprinters making their base at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, and the middle and long distance runners in the town of Kapchorwa.
