Mamelodi Sundowns face foreigner shuffle ahead of PSL season

Mamelodi Sundowns have a plethora of foreigners in their squad... Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix

Mamelodi Sundowns' imminent acquisition of Venezuelan forward Jose Ali Meza leaves them needing to fit square pegs into round holes as they try to sort out which foreigners to register for the coming 2018/19 Premier Soccer League season.

PSL rules state that clubs may only have five foreigners registered at any one time, though Sundowns will have the opportunity to change their mix in January.

It creates a conundrum for coach Pitso Mosimane, who is likely to use the loan market to keep those he deems as surplus to requirements active.

KweséESPN runs an eye over his choices and predicts who he might keep in the four remaining slots after Meza comes on board.

RAZAK BRIMAH

Position: Goalkeeper

Nationality: Ghana

Stay or go: Go

Brimah was signed at the start of last season but has failed to win a regular first team place ahead of Denis Onyango, with his four league starts last season coming due to Mosimane's rotation policy.

This is also an area where Sundowns are well-stocked, with Kennedy Mweene and Thela Ngobeni also on the club's books. Brimah is likely to be sacrificed, either as a permanent transfer or on loan for the season.

JEREMY BROCKIE

Position: Striker

Nationality: New Zealand

Stay or go: Stay

Brockie has not hit the heights he would have liked in his six months at Sundowns and has yet to open his account for the side. But Mosimane has continually spoken of the New Zealanders' importance in terms of fighting for the African Champions League this season and the experience he brings.

With fellow forwards Percy Tau and Khama Billiat also heading for the exit door, Mosimane would be loathe to lose another top striker.

FARES HACHI

Position: Defender

Nationality: Algeria

Stay or go: Go

The Algerian left-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Chippa United and looks set perhaps for permanent exit.

He had not done badly in his stay at Sundowns, but with Tebogo Langerman the preferred player in that position, his opportunities have been limited.

RICARDO NASCIMENTO

Position: Defender

Nationality: Brazil

Stay or go: Stay

Nascimento has seen his influence on the side grow in recent years and was superb when he returned from injury in the second half of last season. He has a steadying influence on the side and rarely has a bad game. He has also proven lethal from the penalty-spot and will form a big part of their Champions League plans this season.

TONI SILVA

Position: Striker

Nationality: Guinea-Bissau

Stay or go: Stay

The former Liverpool striker has only just arrived, so it seems inconceivable he will be sent elsewhere before being given a chance to fight for a place. He comes with bags of experience gained in England, Portugal, Greece and Turkey, and at the age of only 24, is a solid investment for the Chloorkop side.

GASTON SIRINO

Position: Striker

Nationality: Uruguay

Stay or go: Stay

Sirino has taken a while to adjust to the PSL, but it is clear that there is a special player inside that diminutive frame. He needs to catch up to the pace of the league, but once he does, he has the potential to be a real star name and can take over the mantle from the departing Tau.

BANGALY SOUMAHORO

Position: Defender

Nationality: Ivory Coast

Stay or go: Go

Soumahoro has a big frame and plenty of power, but too many errors in recent games have shone the spotlight on his ability.

With Nascimento, the excellent Motjeka Madisha and returning Rivaldo Coetzee also in the mix as centre-back options, Soumahoro might struggle for game-time in any event and that would then be a waste to have him take up a foreigner spot.

YANNICK ZAKRI

Position: Striker

Nationality: Ivory Coast

Stay or go: Go

Zakri is a player full of promise and showed at Ajax Cape Town in the second half of last season that he has the quality to compete in the PSL.

But he is up against some major talents in the team and is unlikely to dislodge the likes of Brockie, Sirino, Meza and even Anthony Laffor, who is a naturalised South African. Another loan or a permanent move away is likely.
