Namibia's Davies cautious despite big Rugby Gold Cup win

Defending champions Namibia laid down an early marker with their rampant 55-6 victory over Uganda in the opening match of their 2019 Rugby World Cup qualification campaign, but coach Phil Davies has warned his players not to get carried away.

Namibia, who are favourites to reach a sixth successive World Cup tournament by winning the Rugby Gold Cup qualification competition, ran in nine tries as they sealed a bonus-point victory in Windhoek.

The win, added to a 23-23 draw between Zimbabwe and Morocco, means it was a good start all-round for Davies' side.

"I'm sure it [Zimbabwe versus Morocco] was a tough game and the result is good for us, but there's a long way to go and the tournament is going to be tough," Davies told reporters.

"Credit to Uganda; they kept on playing, but I was pleased with our boys, they worked really hard and we put some fantastic rugby together. We were also a bit frustrated because I thought we left about five tries on the field, but I think we played well for the first game in eight months and we will get better."

Welshman Davies, who led the side at the 2015 World Cup in England, has sought to freshen up the squad this season, and was pleased with the role of the new players.

"We had some young debutants again which is really pleasing, with PW Steenkamp and Andre Rademeyer, who are both 20-year-olds, coming in and making their debut.

"It's obviously all about winning this tournament, but we are still trying to create some depth because it's a long tournament and we need to have that depth at our disposal."

Namibia will host Tunisia in their second qualification match in Windhoek on Saturday. Only the top team in the six-team round-robin competition automatically qualifies for the World Cup, with the second-placed team heading for inter-continental play-offs.
