Commonwealth Games double gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei has emphasised that he wants to dominate his signature races, the 5,000m and 10,000m, at all global events in the near future.

The Ugandan, who also claimed silver in the 10km at the World Championships last year, won the 5000m with ease in Australia this month, and went on to set a Games record of 27:19.62 in the 10km race.

Cheptegei, 21, told KweséESPN upon his return from Australia on Thursday: "I want to continue breaking several records and market Uganda more and more by being top of the world in my races.

"I know it will call for hard work and dedication, but I am ready to make sure I achieve it.

"Winning two gold medals is a sweet feeling, but setting a new record of the Commonwealth Games also make me feel really excited.

"It is the passion inside me that keeps driving me. When you see that other people are looking up to you and expect a lot like my family, they give me the morale to work hard to win."

Uganda won three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals to finish in 15th position at the Gold Coast Games.

At the reception that took place at the Entebbe International Airport, Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Ugandan First Lady and also minister of education and sports, thanked the team for performing well Down Under.

"We are so proud of you and we thank God for the good performance," she said.

However, the Ugandan effort was marred by the controversial departures from the Athletes Village of two weightlifters, who did not return home with the team, and are part of a group of more than 10 African athletes to leave the Games without their teams' permission.
