Commonwealth Games double gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei has agreed to take part in the 2018 IAAF Diamond League series opener, on May 4 in Doha, Qatar.

The 21-year-old Ugandan recently won the 5000m and 10,000m titles on the Gold Coast. After initially not signing up for the 10km race, he went ahead and broke the Games record instead.

"Cheptegei will run in Doha in the 1500m race this time," Dominic Otuchet, chairman of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), told KweséESPN on Monday.

"This will be another chance for Cheptegei to work more on his speed in the 1,500m race, as he prepares for many other races in the season.

"We are happy that although he started the season at a very slow pace, he has worked hard to be able to win a road race in Europe and now two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games," added Otuchet.

Cheptegei, who is also the world 10,000m silver medalist, will not have chance to run in his preferred longer races in Doha as they are not on the schedule.

In his most recent appearance in the 1500m, in March this year at the Athletix Grand Prix in Johannesburg, Cheptegei finished second behind Kenya's George Manangoi.

The 2018 Diamond League meetings will be staged in Doha, Shanghai, Eugene, Rome, Oslo, Stockholm, Paris, Lausanne, Rabat, Monaco, London, Birmingham, Zurich, and Brussels.
