The history of the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is littered with instances where heroes were made and reputations forged in what is one of the biggest rivalries on the African continent.

Saturday's clash in the Absa Premiership presents another opportunity for players to make their mark and earn their teams what could be a vital three points in the championship race.

KweséESPN picks out three players from either side who could emerge as match-winners.

ORLANDO PIRATES

JUSTIN SHONGA

The forward took a while to settle to the pace of the Absa Premiership, which is a step up from the Zambian Premier League, but there have been signs in recent weeks that he is starting to hit top gear.

He has three goals in his last five games, all scored in the last month, and his brace against Chippa United last time out showed his class.

Shonga is able to play across the front line and has a knack of ghosting into good positions in the box. A derby goal would do a lot to forge his relationship with The Ghost.

MUSA NYATAMA

The hardman in midfield has been a revelation this season since his arrival from Bloemfontein Celtic.

He is no stranger to the 'big club mentality' having spent two seasons at Mamelodi Sundowns, and he has been arguably the most consistent player at Pirates this season.

Nyatama brings steel to the centre of the park but can also spot a pass and has an eye for goal.

BERNARD MORRISON

Morrison tends to blow hot and cold, but the Ghanaian striker also has an 'x-factor' that makes him unpredictable and able to conjure chances from nothing.

He has good pace and is skillful on the ball, and has good confidence after netting three goals in his last two games.

It is perhaps telling that he has started just five times this season, but scored four goals in that time, while he has failed to net any off the bench.

KAIZER CHIEFS

WILLARD KATSANDE

Katsande is mourning the loss of his mother last week, and would no doubt like to notch a win in her memory.

The Zimbabwean remains the engine that keeps Chiefs ticking over, always hard-working and industrious in the central midfield positions.

He is also a formidable tackler, and continues to pick up yellow cards at regular intervals, but there will be no Pirates players relishing going into 50-50 challenges with him.

RYAN MOON

Rookie forward Moon is in the form of his life with five goals in his last seven games, and sits top of the scoring charts for Chiefs this campaign.

He has a knack of finishing off half-chances and has fine predatory instincts in and around the box, with the delivery into him key as he is not the type of player to create an opportunity for himself.
Good in the air and with the ball at his feet, he is a strong option for the 'number nine' role in the side.

ITUMELENG KHUNE

Goalkeeper Khune has played in 25 matches in all competitions for Chiefs and kept 15 clean sheets in those, with his recent form outstanding.

He has conceded only three goals in 10 games and it has not been for a lack of opportunities for the opposition, but his positioning, bravery and reactions have been top notch.

There is no doubt that he has won a number of matches for Chiefs this season and is a major obstacle for Pirates to get past.
