Kenya's Simader completes Giant Slalom in PyeongChang

Olympics - Alpine Skiing

Alpine skier Sabrina Simader, Kenya's sole representative at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, has seen her Giant Slalom adventure come to an end, finishing in 59th place.

Simader finished her first run in that position on Thursday morning in South Korea, in a time of one minute and 23 seconds. She did not complete her second run later in the day, and was one of several athletes to falter before the finish line.

The Giant Slalom, which was delayed by the inclement weather in the northern city, was won by the USA's Mikaela Shiffrin, who completed her second run in 1:09.20 to claim gold. At the Sochi Olympics in 2014, she finished fifth in the Giant Slalom, but won gold in the Slalom event.

According to the IOC schedule, Simader, who moved to Austria at the age of three and learned to ski there, is set to compete in the Super G event on Saturday. The Super G is a longer, faster version of the Giant Slalom, with the gates spaced further apart.

Simader may not have finished close to the medals on Thursday, but remains a notable athlete for Africa, as she is only the second athlete from that nation to compete at a Winter Games, after cross-country skier Philip Boit.
