City sign Uganda winger Kateregga

South African Premier Soccer League side Cape Town City have completed the signing of Uganda winger Allan Kateregga.

The 23-year-old joins the Mother City side from Kampala City Capital Authority (KCCA), where he had been playing on loan from AFC Leopards.

He brings with him the experience of playing on the African continent, a rarity in a City squad that will take their place in the Confederation Cup next month for the first time.

Although he can play anywhere across the forward line, Kateregga is expected to be mostly used as a left-winger, a straight replacement for Aubrey Ngoma, who signed with Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this month.

"I sat with Benni [coach Benni McCarthy] and we discussed the need for a left-footed playmaker and winger that could add something unique going forward," City owner John Comitis was quoted on the club's Twitter feed on Tuesday morning.

"There were a few options for us in the market, but once Benni saw Kateregga play he basically just simply said 'this is the one'."

Kateregga must now go through the formalities of obtaining a work permit, with City next in action on Sunday away at Bloemfontein Celtic.
