Can Kenyan sensation Juma be City's 15-goal-a-season man?

Cape Town City are having another good season as they contest for the league title just past the halfway point of the campaign, but it is fair to say they would be a lot better off if they had solved their striker problem.

City have had little trouble creating chances this campaign, but like many in the Premier Soccer League, getting the ball into the back of the net has proven much harder than it should.

Having lost attacking midfielders Lebo Manyama and Aubrey Ngoma, who between them netted 21 goals last season, City have been scratching around for someone to raise their hand and be a regular contributor.

That has brought both good and bad news. The good news is that their 18 league goals this season (in 17 games) have been netted by an astonishing 14 different players, with the help of one own goal from Maritzburg United's Bevan Fransman.

So they can certainly get goals from different areas, just not enough of them. Only Ayanda Patosi and Roland Putsche have managed more than one league goal this campaign.

It is against that backdrop that Kenyan forward Masoud Juma enters the club, signed in this transfer window from Kariobangi Sharks in his homeland, after he burst out of nowhere to enjoy a prolific campaign.

He netted 24 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions last season, including 18 in the league to win the Golden Boot.

It would be wrong to say he was unheard of prior to the last campaign, but you would have got extremely long odds on him banging in that number of goals, and many eye-brows were raised.

He had trials at BidVest Wits in the last transfer window and was not picked up by The Clever Boys, having also had unsuccessful trials in Sweden.

"I am happy to be here, happy to get my chance in South Africa," Juma told KweséESPN at a press conference on Wednesday.

"This is a big opportunity for me to show what I can do in a bigger league and I am really looking forward to it."

The 21-year-old could make his debut in the Mother City Derby against Ajax Cape Town in what is expected to be a 20,000 crowd on Saturday afternoon.

"It is a dream for every player to play in a derby and if I do get a chance ... well, what an opportunity to make a name for myself," he added.

"To score would be incredible for me, and of course for the club if it means we win the game."

Juma will be competing with Nigerian Victor Obinna, Judas Moseamedi, Nana Akosah-Bempah and Sibusiso Masina for a place in the side, and it is likely he will play off the bench this weekend.

He does at least know what to expect from the football, have been a keen observer of the Premier Soccer League back home, and was looking forward to working with Benni McCarthy, a UEFA Champions League winner with FC Porto.

"It's amazing, I used to be a fan of his and now I am training under him," Juma said of McCarthy.

"I am learning a lot and I am here to work, nothing else. Everything is going well and I am happy. I just want to keep scoring like I do.

"I watched the PSL on TV, so I know it is a good league with very good players that have good technical ability. The training so far has been very good, the standard is very high and I can see that I will have to work very hard to get into this team. There are a lot of good players,"
