Nigeria seek redemption against Libya

Following an uninspiring goalless draw against Rwanda, Nigeria's home-based Super Eagles will hope to redeem themselves when they take on Libya in a group C encounter at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Friday.

The Eagles, joint second in the group together with Rwanda, will face an experienced and organised Libya side, which will feature as many as 10 members of the Al Ahli Tripoli team, along with various others from the and 2014 title-winning squad.

Nigeria were dominant in their opening match, but a host of wasted scoring chances cost the Eagles a winning start to the tournament.

Meanwhile, Libya - coached by Omar El Maryami - showed qualities of champions in a convincing 3-0 win against debutants Equatorial Guinea.

Al Ahli Tripoli's star forward Saleh Al Taher hit a brace in the game and the Nigeria defence will have to devise a means of stopping a player who has the potential to hurt them in several ways.

The fullback pair of Osas Okoro and Daniel James were rarely tested in one-on-one situations against opposition wingers against Rwanda, but are likely to have their work against the skilful left-footed duo of Mohamed Aleyat and Salem Ablo, the former providing the assist for Zakaria Al Harash's third goal on Monday.

Sunday Faleye, a player who enjoyed a breakout season with Shooting Stars FC in 2017, was Nigeria's most effective player on Monday night and that could very well be the case against Libya once more.

Coach Salisu Yusuf suggested in an exclusive chat with KweséESPN after the Rwanda opener that the 19-year-old wing dazzler could become a potent attacking weapon, if he develops a killer instinct in front of goal.

"He needs to be much more focused," Yusuf urged, looking ahead to Nigeria's upcoming showdown with Libya.

"I know he's good in one on ones, but [in front of goal] he needs to be more focused to see that he finishes what he started."

Yusuf might opt to introduce Ibrahim Mustapha in place of Anthony Okpotu - who had a stinker of a game against Rwanda - from the start.

The Enyimba forward almost scored with his first touch on the night after coming on from the bench, and displayed good centre forward play with the ball at his feet.

The Eagles' are aware that created chances may be few against the Libya team, and even when they do breach the defence line, experienced goalkeeper Muhammad Nashnoush is quite a difficult customer to beat, therefore, they need to make every shot count.
