Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr on Wednesday signed a two-year contract extension with the Nigeria Football Federation, a show of confidence after he led the side to World Cup qualification.
The German manager was appointed in July 2016, after previous work experience with African nations Burkina Faso, Niger Republic and Gabon, and has enjoyed a fruitful coaching spell with the Super Eagles.
NFF vice-president Seyi Akinwunmi said after the contract signing that Rohr had done well in his 18 months on the job, and that earning an extension was a natural reward for excellence.
"He has done a very good job and when someone does a good job, he gets a reward. We are proud to have taken Mr. Rohr on board and we are delighted to be signing this contract extension with him," Akinwunmi said in an NFF statement.
Under Rohr's coaching, the Super Eagles have developed a defined playing pattern which has coincided with the steady introduction of young and talented players, a trend which saw the Eagles fielding the youngest team during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In the aftermath of Rohr's new contract, aside from doing well in Russia, he will be expected to see that Nigeria qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament for the first time since being crowned champions in 2013.
The three-time African champions began their 2019 Afcon qualifying campaign on a losing note, at home to South Africa in June 2017.
They will aim to get back on track in their remaining matches, starting in September, in a bid to earn a spot in Africa's recently expanded flagship tournament.
