'Baby Jake' headlines RapidFire in Cape Town

South African featherweight prospect Thembani 'Baby Jake' Mbangatha will line up for his first championship belt at the RapidFire event in Cape Town on November 24.

The nine-bout card forms part of the Friday Fight Night series organised by Kalakoda Promotions and Kwesé Sports.

With a great amateur pedigree and an unblemished professional career to date, a lot is expected of the young boxer who hails from Capricorn Park near Muizenberg.

"Baby Jake is the real deal, and on 24 November it's his time to shine. Winning this belt represents years of dedication and commitment to his craft," coach Steve Newton says.

Mbangatha, a policeman by trade, takes on a tough customer in compatriot Mayhihlomo 'The Axe' Mojonono, and is confident of building on his impressive 7-0 record.

"I have been patiently waiting for this opportunity; it's time to take my boxing career to the next level, and winning this title will open up opportunities," Mbangatha says. "I don't know much about my opponent, but my preparation and sparing has gone well. I'm ready!"

The event takes place at the Wynberg Military base in Cape Town and features three WBF Africa titles. The two co-feature bouts sees crowd favorite Sting Gondarenda from Zimbabwe defend the WBF Africa cruiserweight title he won in Harare earlier this year against the tough Tshanda Tshams from the DRC.

The third title fight features unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Nicholas Radley from South Africa, who takes on Makhasonge Zwengu from Port Elizabeth for the vacant WBF Africa light heavyweight title.

Another notable participant is DRC heavyweight Knife Didier, who is brimming with confidence after his first round knockout of Kizito Ruhamnye in September at the same venue. A former MMA fighter, Didier has made the crossover to boxing with some success, with his only two losses coming at the hands of Ruann Visser.
