Kenya claimed double gold at the Berlin Marathon after Eliud Kipchoge and Gladys Cherono won the men's and women's race respectively. Overnight rain may have dampened Eliud Kipchoge's world record attempt on Sunday, after he crossed the finish line in 2 hours 3 minutes and 32 seconds. The Olympic champion was tactical in his approach and was within World Record time through 23km at 1:08:20, and was closely watched by fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang and Guyo Adola of Ethiopia. However, Kipsang later dropped out and Adola finished second with a time of 2:03:46. Mosinet Geremew of Ethiopia was third in 2:06:09. With the World Record of 2:02:57 set by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto still intact, Kipchoge said: "This was my hardest marathon ever since the weather wasn't conducive for a World Record. "The grounds were slippery because of the rains. "Tomorrow is another day and I am absolutely confident that the World Record is still in my legs," said Kipchoge. Meanwhile, Cherono won the women's race in a time of 2:20:23, followed by Ethiopian Ruti Aga in 2:20:41 and Valary Ayabei of Kenya placed third in 2:20:53.
