FUS Rabat advance to Confederation Cup semifinals

Moroccan side FUS Rabat booked their place in the last four of the CAF Champions League after beating CS Sfaxien 5-4 on penalties at the Stade Taïeb Mhiri in Tunisia on Friday.

After Rabat won the first leg of their quarterfinal 1-0 last week, Tunisian giants Sfaxien won the second leg by the same scoreline to force a penalty shootout, only to lose when their goal-scorer on the night missed his penalty.

The side often referred to as the 'Juventus of the Arabs' got off to the best possible start when they were awarded a 21st-minute penalty, which Karim Aouadhi slotted past Aymane Majid in the Rabat goal, to level the tie at 1-1 on aggregate.

While the hosts were the side looking like the most likely to score, the Rabat defense - marshalled expertly by Mandaw Sy - kept them at bay throughout.

After the break, Sfaxien introduced Senegalese striker Waliou Ndoyee in attempt to stretch the Rabat defense, but clear goal-scoring chances were few and far between.

In the end, Sfaxien maintained their 1-0 advantage on the night, but with the score locked at 1-1 on aggregate a penalty shootout followed.

During the penalty shoot-out, goal-scorer Aouadhi missed his side's first penalty, which proved to be crucial as Rabat were successful with all five of theirs, to claim a spot in the last four.
